This Garage Journal. Wood is good but not for this project. Go buy an little MIG welder, couple grinders and a couple of sticks of 1x2x0.090. Practice welding for a couple of days and sketch up your bench by night. Good luck, have fun.
I don't need another vise but couldn't pass on this beastly Howard Iron Works #5. I've been lurking for three or so years around here and don't recall it in my reading. Seemed wise to grab it.
Haven't done anything to it or looked at vlosely but appears to be in fine shape.
I've had similar experience as WildBill. I made a driveway gate of new rectangular tube ~20 years ago. Used Rustoleum Clean with at least two top color coats of Rustoleum. Damn thing is 50' from ocean at high tide and it was only two years ago that it deserved a freshening up but wasn't bad.

Never dismiss old time methods. BLO is awesome. Like Beerhippie, I cut it and use it on metal as well.
It's getting expensive but because people think it's old fashioned, I always seem to be picking it up for free from friends, cleanouts, etc.
I don't think it's dumb, especially in a moderate climate.

Not so far but I've only used it for about an hour. I cleaned up a bunch of old wrenches with a wire wheel (put on after photo) so no grinding where I'm applying more force.
That rotor is pretty heavy; I bet close to 20 pounds and ~15" diameter. Two feet of 2" schedule 40 pipe adds 7+ pounds...
I think you're right; whether it's measureable is hard to say.
A machine in the sun is still within its design parameters and functions fine. However, the air being sucked into it is being heated as it moves over the sun baked cabinet and adjacent surfaces. Given the choice to locate (if AC...
Finished grinder stand. Drilled hole patterns 3 different grinders. E60 M5 rotor is the base. Messed up on correct height to sit on 5 gallon pail.
So nice to grind outside.
Lots of approaches here, all pretty sound. I'll reinforce and hopefully add a little.
Protect surrounding areas you need to preserve or don't want to spend lots of time cleaning. Some how, some way, shards fly off or a spinning tool will nick a surface.
I'm not big on banging the **** out...
