The original plan was just a simple thickened edge monolithic slab. But I was mostly talked out of that. I'm pretty certain if I were to add block, it would still be on top of the slab (no foundation/footer).
Kinda figured the 4" block wouldn't be up to par.
And unfortunately, there is nowhere...
Trying to work out some specifics...
Will the 4" blocks be sound for load bearing, or would 6" be a better idea? I'm thinking 2 rows (for +16") would suffice.
Then when the day comes to pour, I assume I'd need to plan ahead for any reinforcements to the wall and anchoring between the slab...
Excellent shop. Looks like you're local to me (I'm in oshkosh). I gather you're into bikes too...maybe we can meet up for a ride sometime, and I can check the place out firsthand.
Yeah, patience has never been my strong point. I'll check back periodically.
I hope to get things moving as soon as things thaw around here. I've been putting this off for years, but I'm reminded every winter (when it's too late) just how much I hate working in a frozen garage.
On a plus...
Is this the ticket?

There is a solid version, but it's considerably more expensive. There is also a corner block...seems like that would be handy.
So how would I anchor the...
OK ok..I'm convinced. Adding a block wall (and the extra effort involved) is worth it. Well that brings a couple more questions. So block is 8" wide and my walls are 4"...I assume the extra 4" of block would be put to the inside. Seems like common sense but hey, I've never done this. Then when...
My thought is a small lean to shed out back next to the man door...though it would be more for kids toys, bikes etc. This is a small city lot, so not much room for another structure...but that also means pretty minimal lawn and garden tools.
Ok, got a plan for the slab itself. As for the course of block...I get the reasoning, and I understand this would be the time to do it...but is it necessary? I'm shooting for quick/cheap/effective. If I gain no space, and the new pt sills last as long as the old ones (which were sitting in the...
So yeah/no? Thick edged slab ok? 3" enough for the center? And should I be doing rebar around the perimeter? What about welded wire mesh across the floor?
Yeah, I'm not really wanting to do a footing and foundation. Please tell me if I'm wrong here, but I don't see why monolithic slab wouldn't work.
Budget wise, single income for a family of three don't leave much. But I should have enough to do it, if I keep it simple and take a step at a time...
I'm hearing 2 things...either build a block wall (below grade and above, I assume) then pour floor...or pour floor, then add block above that. I'm not doing stairs for the man door up and over a wall, I'd much rather lower the door.
BTW, it's about 12'×22', with a wall height of just under 8'. Studs are true 2×4, spaced at 24". Sheathing is lap board siding for the top 2/3, and OSB on the bottom 1/3.
