what can you tell me about this mill?

Nice! If the mill is operationnal, and looks like its in good shape, its got this real cool feature of rotary feed; tooling associated is a big part of the cost too... Here's a vid

    drill speed for aluminum

What is your drill, HSS? Co? point? Usual SFM for Al in drilling for HSS is around 600SFM 600x3.82 / 0.500 = 4500 RPM approx The worst enemey of Al is B.U.E. (build up edge) Meaning that Al will stick to the tool, and prevent cutting action. The way to prevent this is to bump up the speeds...

    The most unassuming garage?

Personally, I like the look of nothing from the outside; Stealthy, but all I need, neet & tidy on the inside... Thats my garage in the back of the house; the same principle applies to my shop in my basement

    Show us your lathe

Nothing fancy, HF 13X40 gearhead. Had the thing for aver 5 years, but I am now wishing I went to a better used machine, instead of a new lower quality... Installed a DRO myself on it:

    low ceiling + vehicle lift

A few pics of my set-up; By laws maxed out wall height at 9'6" But I decided to vault my ceileing bringing the clearance to 10'6" I also had the garage door tracks custom made to follow the vaulted roof pitch:

    Welding in walk-out basement

As soon as you go negative pressure (lower than the return of you ducts) in that room, you should be fine; I have a shop in my basement, and I re-purposed a Kitchen vent / hood over my workbench to blows outside with a very short distance duct; works great ; but be shure you get enough CFM...

    Show us your welding projects

Just finished making a jig, to adapt a Toyota pick up diff housing, onto a first generation RX7. Axles flange being larger (and housing too...) I had to use centerline as the reference point. I also machined some centering rings for the larger Toyoata diff. Housing being 0.078" shorter, a 0.039"...

Little car, little garage. One car VW home.

What a beautiful mk1 Polo! Gery market I presume? Would you happen to have more pics? You really don't see many of these, and they are not even road legal to import in Canada... Thought you were from Pa. when I saw all those nice rides... I have an addiction also... Cheers! Fred

    Hanging chain fall from ceiling.

Did this a few years ago, with my motorcycle: Rated capacity of a #14 screw X 3" long is about 500lbs in lumber. always add X 2 for security, so basically rate it a 250Lbs. But its not the screw that will limit the weight, but the structure itself, in most of the case. If you have access, on...

Stub length vs. Jobber length drills

General rule of thumb on sub & jobber length: Jobber: Ratio of about 4-5:1 on diameter to cutting length So a 1/4'' drill would have approximately 1" to 1-1/4" cutting length Stub: usual 2-3 X D so 1/4" would have 1/2" or so cutting length. The stubs usually come in at 135 deg split point...

    Teach me about taps

Just as a starter note, cutting tools has ben my bread & butter for the past 25 years. I presently work for a tool company, that has been in business for over 100 years, and I can say that this is not only my income, but my true passion. First: When I see something like "rethreading" taps...
