The existing wiring was way overboard, as was the breaker for it. I think it was a 50A breaker for some damn reason on the old RUUD unit.

totally incorrect. you dont need a grounding electrode for a heat pump. you need an EGC. you like many people confuse the difference...

IMHO, 8 AWG wire is superior to 10 AWG for that purpose.
