    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thanks Shiftless. I did add way-oil to the bare metal parts, making them look a bit darker. I think it is the lighting too. Funny that this orange vise came up while you where discussing this colour. It took me some time to finish this one, the before picture is in post #47439 (that was...

    Tools from the old world

Very true, and underrated indeed. The metric ones hardly ever pop up on local craigslist here. I am glad I found these.

    Tools from the old world

Found me this metric Stahlwille Stubby set, took me some years to find.

Tell me more how to use these vintage dies

And now making a 1/4" x 30tpi thread. Whitworth that is. Interestingly, the distance between the two chip openings is very close to 3/8". I think I'll make some gage (as suggested by 2oolhound) to have an easy first setup. The screw thread micrometer shows 5,83mm (0,22953") for the thread...

Tell me more how to use these vintage dies

So, today I made some threads with the vintage tap and die set. Could not find any bolts that fit, so made some pieces of brass rod and tapped it. First 5/16th x 24tpi threads. First I set the die to the diameter of the tap. Than make the threads. I had to close the two halves a little and...

Tell me more how to use these vintage dies

Thanks for all the usefull tips and suggestions. Good to hear I can use the dies to make new threads. That makes me happy. Fitting a good bolt as a reference is a good idea. I will try to find some bolts and do some experiments. Also, I will measure between the chip openings and see what...

Tell me more how to use these vintage dies

I recently purchased this vintage (German?) tap and die set. The brand looks to be Eventus Perplex. There's a german text inside that says "Zoll Engl. gänge" which translates "Inch English thread". The threads measure Whitworth. All taps come in a tapered and bottoming tap. The dies are made...

Cleaning tools that batteries corroded in.

+1 Duracell batteries are the worst you can buy. My kids electric train was distroyed by a leaking duracell battery. They refunded a new train but no more duracell for me. I found a link on the website of duracell "how do I clean after a battery leak"...

Mysterious new (old..) vise I was lucky to get

I found the same vise in 2014 although mine is a 150 (jaw in mm) and yours is a 125. Mine has no date stamped in the keyway, but a least I have an idea now of its age. Yours seems to be in a lot better condition. Is your endcap still in place? Thanks for sharing ! My W-G is shown in this...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Recently bought this tiny (3,5 x 6 inch) Record folder. I've been told it's from 1937. Interesting to see Record made 7 and 8"-ers. I don't think I've ever seen one. The 8" with swivel base costed 42,35 Dutch guilders (fl), which would be 875,60 euros ($ 924,55) nowadays. Cheers !

    reading a micrometer?

You could check/verify your reading by using another measuring device, for example a (digital) caliper.
