Will magnets applied externally to the metal case of an electric motor negatively affect the operation of the motor?

I just mounted a grinder on a pedestal base and I'd like to mount a lamp to illuminate the work area. I have an idea of modifying a commercially available goose-neck desk lamp with a magnetic base and sticking it on the metal case of the grinder motor. It's an induction motor. Will the magnets...

Do old oxy-acetylene regulators have any value to keep or sell?

I inherited three oxy-acetylene regulator sets. One is a complete set with hoses and a torch that was used until recently, so I know it works. But I also got two other regulator/gauge sets with no hoses, and one old torch, that had been gathering dust in an old farm shop. They look old and...

    I know nothing about drywall/sheetrock....

    >You don't need a drywall drill. Like falcon said, get a pack of drywall bits... Yes. This! These are worth their weight in gold. I wouldn't do a drywall job without one. Although I don't know why you'd need a pack of them. I've had the same one since 1983.

    I know nothing about drywall/sheetrock....

I think there is a bit of a knack to it - some people catch on quickly and others don't. The people that don't have the knack need proper methodical training. I'm self-taught and I've done a few home jobs myself and I kinda enjoy doing it, and don't find it difficult. Other friends of mine that...

Garage door opening spontaneously - only partially

Several people have suggested that someONE must be responsible for this. This seems kinda paradoxical...because on one hand it is the only thing that makes any sense, and yet it makes absolutely no sense. In terms of someone doing this by having access to and operating the controls, no one else...

Garage door opening spontaneously - only partially

I don't know what you mean. Where is this safety catch?

Garage door opening spontaneously - only partially

    > Did someone die in your house or was it possibly built on an ancient burial ground? Someone is GOING to die at my house, and my potato patch will become a burial ground if I catch someone in my garage in the middle of the night. :)

How can I keep people on my driveway?

What about widening the driveway on the inside of the curves to reduce the curvature. Studies have shown that people are stupid. This is likely to continue no matter what you do. People aren't dropping a wheel over the edge intentionally, they're just misjudging where their back wheel is. You...

Just curious - Any one ever live in their shop?

Someone I know did that. He and his wife bought an acreage and started by building a shop with a temporary home built inside. They lived in the shop while building their dream house. Life's little problems dragged out the completion of the house and now it's fifteen years on, the house still...

Garage door opening spontaneously - only partially

Hello GarageJournalers, I haven't been on the site much lately, but I have a new twist on an old problem. A couple of years ago I told you about the problem I was having with my garage door opening by itself in the middle of the night, and about the solution I came up with to stop that...

How to remove graffiti on a garage door

A few months ago some new owners moved into the tumbledown house across the street from me, and I watched with approval as they immediately got to work fixing it up - big tree removal, new roof, new siding. During August and September I watched the guy build a nice double garage. This morning I...

    Heated cabinet for winter storage

Hmmm...good to know. Thanks. My original idea of a string of light bulbs is seeming like a better idea all the time.

    Heated cabinet for winter storage

Yeah, that's the discussion we had last fall in my original post. I was initially going to do that, but if the bulb burns out, everything freezes. I was thinking of using a string of small lights, so if one burned out you could catch it before everything froze. I guess I don't know about the...

    Heated cabinet for winter storage

It is "heat-able", i.e. I have a 220V electric construction heater which I use if I'm working out there, but I don't keep it heated. All the information in the post above is with the garage NOT heated.

    Heated cabinet for winter storage

Voi asked: "On colder days how hot to the touch would you say the heater gets?" I recall that it was warm enough that it was uncomfortable to hold your hand on it for more than a few seconds, like the side of a cup of takeout coffee?? What would that be...maybe 140-150 degrees F? Not hot enough...
