I have a straight set with two flex heads to complete the missing ones. I dislike the flex because it's flimsy at times.
go with the straight. Unless to you really see yourself needing to use them on tight spots.

Wright grips are nice. (actually saving up for them). But if budget doesnt allow, gear wrench makes a decent set even ratcheting ones.

drivesitfar : Our shop has the same kind of work bench. It's deep enough that you can place a few things below it like chemicals or jacks / jack stands.
You can't beat the value of free. Duralast makes a decent socket and ratchet set as long as you're not gonna abuse it. I can't really think of anything in an apartment environment that would break a ratchet.

As much as i like the look and feel of the channellock 424 pliers. The width of the plier head is too thick for what i do. Only the craftsman ones afit perfectly. :(
my first oil change on my mom's car using my uncle's craftsman ratchet and 17mm socket. Stripped the drain bolt and my uncle ended up having to bail me out.
