Definitely use nail plates anywhere a wire or pipe goes through a stud. Basic insurance for when you end up hanging something on the wall. I hit a few nail plates while working on my house. Always thankful I put them in.
Miller makes a p100 half mask for welding. You can get the filters laced with carbon for vapor removal though, I have them and I'm not sure how effective they are.
You can look up Miller ellipse. It's actually a pretty good mask.
