I just purchased a 40x90x14 hanger on a grass strip. The current lighting is a few 8’ fluorescent fixtures. What LED lights are most using in a application like this? It is going to be used as part hanger part classic car tinkering.
Thanks

What do you want to do in the space?

Big Door end hanger a airplane approx 40x40 area. The rest work shop classic car storage and hang out space.

Doesn’t sound like you’d need nearly the same levels of light as a working shop throughout the whole space unless you want flexibility. If you’re sure of where the workshop area is and the storage area is, plan accordingly. Your situation would be well served with dimmers.

Hangar at the rural municipal airport I was learning to fly out of had exactly one 100w incandescent on the ceiling. I preflighted the plane mostly by feel.

You hangar?

If you ever get a sign for the doors of your new hangar, please spell it correctly. Used to fly helicopters for a large offshore company, and one of their mandoors going into the hangar had a “Hanger” sign. Drove me crazy.

Hi,
My shop is 30x60 x14. It had 6 2 bulb 8ft fixtures. Last year I converted them to led lamps. I used these lamps which are 5500 watts each and 5000k color temp:

https://www.rexelusa.com/usr/Root-C...Linear,-96",-43W,-Single-Pin,-5000K/p/1297095

I have attached a picture that I just took. There is also a 6tube 4ft T8 fixture hanging in the back that we were experimenting with. If my shop was 40x90 I would probably do at least 15 of the same type fixture. 3 rows of 5 ? Personally I do not like the round high bays. I dont think they spread the light out as evenly as long tubes.

The other thing that might make a big difference is that my walls are painted white. If yours are going to be a dark color I think you will probably need even more lights.

As many costco led shop lights as it takes. I have approx one light for every 100ft sq and have zero complaints. Wait until they go on sale and load up.

I just replied to another post, but I used Hyperlite LED high bay lights from Amazon. I've been very happy with them.

According to the FAA..... Air craft hangars are NOT to be used for storing or working on cars.
I know a lot of people do it at small local airports and don’t have a problem UNTIL something goes wrong.

Back to OPs question: High Bays will work great....... See posts #11 and 13

I don’t have a problem with anyone doing anything with THEIR property as long as it’s not illegal.

12-18000 lumen highbays would be about right for that height.

Why would someone even consider those in this application?

OP sounds like it might be HIS property on a grass strip, but at lots of public airports you're just leasing a space, and usually there is a wait-list. So while your plane is tied down on the ramp, Bob who's friends with the airport manager is working on year ten of his stagnant Plymouth Valiant restoration in a hangar with no plane in sight. General Aviation is dying, and in my opinion it's a death of a thousand cuts, but hangar availability/cost is one of the cuts.

Yep and that is why I bought on a private 3000' lit grass airport the FAA can't control what I do. The FAA is killing GA flying by not allowing people to hang out a the airport and tinker. I bought a 100 watt 14000 Lumen UFO high bay to try.

Well if you are in a T Hangar I agree but if you lease the land and build your own hangar I personally think there should be some allowance to do more stuff. "not run a business etc" Most lease agreements require you turning over the hangar you paid to build in 15 to 20 years to the airport authority.

My comments were geared to my experience at two small, primarily GA airports. One enforced the non-aviation thing, but the wait-list was absolutely who you knew, not when you signed up.

The other didn't enforce the non-aviation thing, so the net effect was some really nice planes were sitting on the ramp while some perfectly good hangars were basically storage units. Was frustrating.

Edit to add: at airport with good enforcement, but a wait list, I asked about building more hangars (I'm in large scale commercial/industrial construction...t hangars are like weekend projects) and was told "demand doesn't justify it" while same manager said wait for a hangar could be 3-5 years.

Like I say...GA is dying for a number of reasons.

Yes sir we agree!! Short sighted small airport management is killing GA. I do think T hangars or any hangar built with airport money should be for aircraft only. My issue was if I invested my funds to build and have to give to them in 15 to 20 years I had the same rules. Some of the most busy small airports I have seen do not enforce the FAAs rules and people come out tinker, fly, hang out and chair fly. Of course the cost of a new Cessna 172 or Carbon Cub does not help either.
