parting steel w/mini lathe (atlas 618) tips?

Assuming you have another insert, try again and spin the lathe as fast as it'll go.

    Machining a metal instrument panel?

Trepan tool in the boring head or helical interpolate the hole in a cnc mill (you could do the same operation manually with a rotary table). Comes down to how valuable and rare the workpiece is. I'd toss it on the cnc mill personally.

    Tapping a stainless steel rod.

Stainless is the wrong material. And you're not going to be able to cut those threads with a threading die (they won't come out concentric). So go ahead and return the stainless shaft. Can you post a detailed drawing of your spindle so we can see the part you're trying to make? There might...

Tried getting stuck manifold bolt out... Welded extractor inside

If the broken extractor is HSS you will not be able to drill it with a regular drill bit (even cobalt). A carbide drill bit will not tolerate being used in a hand drill. Welding on HSS is going to be difficult due to the carbon content. Your best bet is a carbide ball burr and a die...

    New 30x50 shop, which coating?

I used clear polyurea on my shop. I grew tired of epoxy staining and scratching (metal chips from machine tools end up on the floor around the machines). The colored products look great for about 12 months then looks rough in high traffic areas. The clear hides it pretty good and can be...

Ideas on removing stuck studs in a die casting

A good weld should twist the stud off before the weld fails. So if the nut came off there is room to improve the weld. I would your focus efforts on getting a better weld. Once you twist the stud off then it'll be time to change plans to send to someone with machine tools.

Point load for I-beams - I'm building a bridge crane

I will say that if you do pursue building your own crane I would recommend load testing in accordance with OSHA standards. I would go conservative on your load rating. I think once you price the steel you'll find that the gantry crane OEM's get such a discount on material that there's very...

Point load for I-beams - I'm building a bridge crane

If you're not comfortable doing the load calculations I would recommend buying an already engineered structure. I design lifting equipment for a living and it's easy to miss something. Anyone qualified to design something like this isn't going to provide instructions on a forum. Too much risk.

    Vice jaw fabrication

I tried to send a PM but I can't tell if it sent. My wilton jaws checked out at about 50hrc. That hardness makes it relatively uneconomical to make as a one-off due to heat treating costs. Most wilton jaws are still available...

Anyone know what this tool set does?

That's a platen set for a rockwell hardness machine. Also has standards in it. Added link - http://www.phase2plus.com/hardness-tester/hardness-testblocks.htm

    Femi 782xl Band Saw

I bought one and it gets the job done for the small footprint. It's definitely a compromise between quality, size and cost. Already replaced the stripped plastic levers. It will need to be replaced down the road with a more industrial quality tool. But it is an acceptable stop gap...

fixing a stripped out alu hole

Helicoil will be as good or better than the original threads if done correctly. You need to thread the helicoil to the full depth of the original thread. If you can't get a helicoil in there reliably I would attempt to keensert it. Again it's important to get the same engagement as the...
