Take a sharp chisel or knife and cut the upward pointing portion of the locking system off, but not completely and then apply glue to the joint. As for not installing the trimmer before erecting the wall, one guy said to me he did it that way because he felt it gave a stronger opening because the bottom plate is nailed straight through under the trimmer and not just toe nailed.
