As for not installing the trimmer before erecting the wall, one guy said to me he did it that way because he felt it gave a stronger opening because the bottom plate is nailed straight through under the trimmer and not just toe nailed.

Thanks for the answer, I keep checking craigslist for free foam from a demolition job or leftovers. I might steal your idea of the foam boards in the wall and then spray foam on top.
