For cosmetic stuff use magnets. Truck stops/ truck repair centers have some POWERFUL magnets. They use them for holding signs/flags/banners on their rigs at 75 MPH+ so they will deff be able to hold a sign or clock or whatever.

I have yet to find anything "cheaper" than sheet rock. That being said I did my walls in rock and my ceiling in steel cus its faster, easier and I didn't have to tape, sand, prime, and paint the ceiling with a scaffold.
