Hey everyone,

Great info on the site...thanks to all for that!

Looking to start my detached 30x36x10 in April. As the title states, checked out the Performax cabinets and workbench at Menards. For my use, light duty [car detail and some woodworking], they seem like they would be fine. But it's always good to hear from actual users. Did a search on the forum and not much out there on them.

So good or bad or ??

Thanks!
Kyle

I don't own them but I'm sure someone here does. They are not a popular item here because they are light duty. I think most here would rather spend a bit more for something more substantial and that you can get parts for. The Masterforce line that Menards sells has a pretty good following here.

Thanks. They seemed alright for the price, but I don't want them to fall apart and be stuck with junk.

I've had a six drawer lower chest for 4 or 5 years now. I liked it so much, I recently bought another six drawer lower and a six drawer top chest used on CL. Absolutely no complaints at all. In my opinion, the quality is far better with Performax than any of the similarly priced boxes out there. In all honesty, I think they are on par with some of the boxes that cost 2x or 3x more. For light to medium duty use, I don't think you'll have any problems as long as you don't overload the drawers.

The only two bits of advice I will add are to pull all the drawers and give the inside of the box a quick coat of spray paint. They don't quite get everything coated and I had a little bit of surface rust forming on mine. The other thing is to hit the drawer slides with some white lithium grease and they'll slide as smooth as glass.

Thanks bdbecker! I also like the storage cabinets and the 65" workbench. All on sale right now and for the price and what I need just might be fine for my use.

I have 6 of the wall cabinets. On sale at Menard's $69. I like them and for my garage storage they work fine. I'm not hesitant to recommend them for home use. The light gauge seems quite adequate.

I have these in my garage. Have nothing bad to say about them. They've been up a few years now and have been good cabinets for the money in my opinion.

I have the Performax 3 drawer deep intermediate box on top of a Masterforce 27 inch cabinet. Painted the face of the Performax drawers from gray to black so it matches the Masterforce. I have no complaints on the Performax box, but keep in mind the Masterforce is a nicer and heavier box. The Performax slides arent as nice and the metal isnt as heavy. But for the money they arent too bad IMO. I might get the Performax top box in the future.

Greetings,

I have used the Performax workbench, tool chests (rolling) and wall cabinets in my previous garage (most of the pictures have been taken off-line, as I don't own the house anymore). Being Canadian, it took a 3 hour cross-border efforts to get it all, so I definitely had to work for the purchase. Here are my thoughts on each item:

Wall cabinets: Knock-down "build yourself", out of 8, one had issues going together, but I had to "live with it." They felt okay, but are somewhat shallow, and really tall stuff limits you to using the bottom, and no shelf. I used a 1x6 on the wall to hold them all level on the wall, which definitely helped. I would give them a 9/10 for value for money. I believe they were under $100 when I purchased them.

Workbench: I combined it with two roller cabinets underneath. This didn't allow me to "sit and work" comfortably at the bench. However, once mounted to the wall (via some "U" brackets) it was sturdy. I also had mounted a vice on it, and the top was definitely "tough". It did get greasy easily, as its unfinished paper / wood material. I wasn't concerned with it, as I used it for work. If you are going to use it alone, I would give it a 8/10, with rollercabinets, 6/10.

Rather than buying the Performax rollercabinets, I would highly recommend the Masterforce toolbox (2 piece). I believe the 41 (or 46 inch) has a nifty pull-out workspace, which in essence, is a workbench (albeit not with a wall-supported vice). This toolbox, combined with the Performax uppercabinets and / or large floor cabinets, with workbench make for great storage.

Now with the Canadian dollar trading at 70%, these Menards deals aren't so great. Sigh.

Note, my cabinets were in a heated garage, but in a climate that went down to -45 Celcius.

I have 4 of their wall cabinets, 3 stand up locker type cabinets, the workbench with 2 roll out drawer boxes. All have been fine. I have them loaded up and have items stored on top of them. I haven't had any issues with the thickness of the material.

I got them on a great sale, and I also told them that Lowe's was running 10% off, so they gave me that off as well.

My father bought a set for my BIL a couple years ago when him and my sister bought their first house. They definitely aren't the greatest, but the ones he bought were on sale and a good value for the money spent. It still goes well, probably only gets opened a few times a month.

Thanks all! Depending on how the budget goes, I'll probably go with them...unless I have a little extra then I'll look at the Newage.

I have two workbenches and one 36" locker cabinet and one 48" locker cabinet. My opinion is the locker cabinets are quite flimsy freestanding. HOWEVER I drilled a couple of holes in the back of cabinet and used two screws to attache each one to my studs and that helped A LOT. The work benches are decent quality, my biggest complaint with them is the top is unfinished and stains easily. If I had it to do over again I might have spent just a little more for New Age (or something similar). Overall I would give them a 6/10. Probably good enough but there is def some better cabinets out there for for about 30-40% more money.

FWIW even my gladiator 72" standup cabinet was flimsy until I anchored it to a wall.
