Higher Wall Shelves for occasional-use storage

Depending on how much weight you are putting on it, I will try and describe what I did at my old house but I have no pics. I didn't want the support beams hanging down and was only putting up Christmas decorations etc, so nothing crazy heavy. I nailed a 2x4 ledger board across the wall to...

    Heating 2nd floor

I would suggest at least having cold air return size/type vents providing a pass through into the bathroom, maybe a couple. But frame them so the air is forced to pass through. I'd maybe go with your fan on thermostat idea as well. But really, why not just run some tin and put a vent in there...

    DropCam for garage security.

I'm just setting up my own home security using the same. They're called IP cameras, and you can get the very highly rated Foscam for less than $100. Superior to a home alarm in many ways I think.

    Need some Pegboard Ideas

I went crazy with slat wall. For $40 a sheet and no mudding and taping to do, I love the stuff.

    is 14/3 sufficient?

Don't waste your time / money with anything more than 14/2 and 15 amp breakers. If you are going to do a compressor / welder / whatever then go big, but not for standard outlets or lights. The trick would be to only put 3 or 4 outlets per breaker instead of the 6 allowed. You can space them 4...

    Rafter vents

If you look on Durovents website you can actually see that they sell a different piece to attach to the top plate. Or you could just use a piece of styrofoam. But yes, it does have to take the venting up and into the rafter vents. http://adoproducts.com/as_durovent-baffle You can see in the...

    Wall Hangers on sheetrock

If you check at Lowes they have slat wall as pictured above for about $40 per sheet for a 4x8 unfinished. White is about $65. 4 sheets would do a nice strip right down the middle 4' high and 32' long. You said 8' ceiling? rip the drywall lengthwise and do 2' at the bottom, 4' slatwall, then 2'...

Insulating garage ceiling with solid rafters

Ya, disregard my advice. Thought you had a sloped roof and venting. Even though you clearly do not... Just seal it off at the soffits with some rigid foam sheets.

Insulating garage ceiling with solid rafters

My guess would be that you need rafter ventilation. Like these: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/rigid-extruded-polystyrene-attic-rafter-vents/925601# I think Lowes has a less expensive version. You would cut them in half or maybe shave a bit more due to the 12" oc spacing. It's possible with...

Outlet Height - Garage Journal Best Practices?

The best advice I got was to make them higher than 48". That way when you have a sheet of wood leaning against the wall they aren't covered. Funny, because I don't think I've ever in my life NOT had a sheet of something 4x8 leaning against a wall somewhere. Works for me!

Anyone build an underground garage for their house?

I would say those are very rough guesstimates that I gave. And I was trying to consider excavating in the city. Either way, you are looking at serious amounts of concrete. We just built a 2000 sq ft house and the foundation alone was over $20k. So, double that for your minimum, add a ramp, and...

    Scored Slatwall Today.

That wall will make you very happy! :) I just bought 24 4x8 sheets from a company going out of business for $300 and I've been slowly installing it. HEAVY when its full sheets!! The problem I'm finding is it so easy to hang stuff now I can't get the rest of the garage finished because I'm busy...

Anyone build an underground garage for their house?

There are plenty of those in the Toronto area. Drive through the Bridal Path and almost every house has them. Same for a few in Rosedale (Gerry Schwartz / Heath Reissman's house comes to mind). I have to think about 50k to do that size. Don't forget you require the ramp to be heated and have...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The “Too Many Projects” Shop

I see a beautiful spot like that, with beautiful cars, and all that space and the first thing I can think is, " Why ON EARTH don't you have a real race car??" :D I'm gonna recommend you visit here: http://www.race-cars.com/ , then get a 24' enclosed, and report back right away. ;) Wives love...

Tiles on sale at Sears, anyone try these?

I wouldn't use them for a garage other than to stand in front of the workbench, but I have 3 or 4 sets that I have used in various places in the house over the past 10 years. They are now the floor in my gym. They haven't chipped, cracked, stunk up the joint, or otherwise failed in any way. They...
