I live in a pretty secluded area and have never thought much about security for my shop - I'd hate to admit it, but I rarely lock up. However, I've been lurking here and after reading some of the threads about guys getting ripped off, I decided I ought to do something.... Someone in one of these threads mentioned DropCams - and since I had WIFI in my barn already, I decided to give it a try.

I have to say it works pretty well - Sends a notification (E-Mail or phone message) whenever it detects motion. Took about 2 minutes to set up (I just have it sitting on my lift for now). Stores a week of HD video if you pay $49/year. For me its better than an alarm which I would have false alarms on all the time. My shop area doesn't have any windows, and still gives a pretty good image from the infrared in the dark.

The cameras seem kind of expensive ($149 at Amazon) but good for peace of mind.

I got the message above when guy who is doing some work for me entered the shop this morning...

cool! Whats the resolution of the image you are getting? Is it high enough to identify the face?
I´m looking for a good system for my new garage as well.

Its high definition video (1280X1024?) - So I think you could identify faces if you mounted it near the door.... I really didn't do anything but turn it on and set it out there so there may be more options. You can watch the video live from phone or computer and there's also audio. It has a speaker, you can talk to through your phone and scare someone. There are cheaper cameras ($49) out there - but the DropCam guys seem to take the hassle out of set up and recording.

I'm just setting up my own home security using the same. They're called IP cameras, and you can get the very highly rated Foscam for less than $100. Superior to a home alarm in many ways I think.
