    Gravel base

This is a still from the video at the end of this article if you want to see the compaction in real-time (skip to minute 22:30). The video is of a shed foundation install, but it's the same stone we use under concrete pads.

    Gravel base

I should clarify...by "washed stone" I'm referring to crushed aggregate that has been washed of the 'fines'. It sounds like you're referring to real gravel or "river rock"...in that case you are correct that there is very little, if any, compaction.

    Gravel base

By washed stone, I mean crushed aggregate with the fines washed out of it. I would have to disagree with you on that...here's a photo we took at one of our jobs that definitely shows some compaction happening to lock the stone in place. You can see the difference between what's been hit by the...

    Gravel base

Curious what type of aggregate you ended up using? We use 3/4" clean (or 'washed') gravel for the garage pads we pour around here (southeast PA). They say it's 95% compacted straight out of the truck. This video gives a close up of it getting spread on one of our jobs:

Random questions for finishing my shed (hurricane ties, drip edge, roofing felt etc)

I would completely agree. GAF makes a good product (forget what it's called ATM) that's close to the same price as felt paper, but quite a bit sturdier. Especially on steep roofs, I've had too many close calls with felt paper.

    WWGJD? Residing/roofing old building

I roofed for years and I would 10/10 get that old roof off asap, especially if it's on top of old wood shakes. The roof is the #1 most important thing to protecting your investment :)

My 12x22 Amish Prefab garage "build"

I would not use tile...those prefab sheds are pretty sturdy, but the floors would still probably flex a bit much over time.

    tools for siding?

Depending on the situation, that siding hook can be a life-saver!

    Ribbed metal siding

Like others said, you don't need insulation if there's no heat or AC in the building. If there is, one of the common ways to insulate with metal roofs is with bubble insulation (just search for it with Home Depot, etc.

Roofing color match or contrast to siding?

Worked for years as a roofer and I can definitely say I preferred the look of jobs where the roof color contrasted! Might be personal preference but I think it's the best look. A quick and easy way to test different color combos is to find a site with a 3D design software of some kind and test...
