Do him a tremendous favor and start with O/A welding. Small torch and small projects. He'll learn puddle manipulation and heat control. O/A, Arc, MIG, TIG is a good path. I believe that MIG, especially gas shielded solid wire, can start some very bad habits quickly.

I believe my water table for my 4x8 was about $600 total. I just tig welded the corners up. I've read about the aluminum and hydrogen issues, but I've cut quite a bit of 5052 and 6061 and never had a problem.

Yep, I have 24 of them mounted with self tapping screws in my metal building.

Mine has been through 4 years of rough use too... Almost all the mechanical fasteners have been tightened though!
