    work benches... from scratch

Here's my latest - I scored some bowling alley sections off Craigslist a couple of years ago, been slowly making benches as I have time. Unfortunately they're the pine sections of the lane, not the maple, but... I've been making them all 6'x28" (so they're not too deep and become giant...

    Garages at Night Thread

As requested, here are a few pictures of the Mustang and Galaxie; both are works-in-progress, but they're fun! The Mustang is a '69 Mach1 with a 390 and 4-speed, Baer brakes all around, and a basically stock suspension with subframe connectors; I rebuilt the motor a couple of years ago with...

    Garages at Night Thread

And here's mine... Nothing too fancy; a 30x40 backyard shop, but I sure like hanging out back there... Jeff

    Above 1200 Sq/FT Restored 1930's Auto Shop

Thanks for the pictures Thomas!! I verified last night, and indeed, I also have a "G924" stamped into the base of the hydraulic cylinder. All the pictures you posted look identical to my jack, so I must be on the right track. One other pesky question, while I have your ear... My sheet-metal...

    Above 1200 Sq/FT Restored 1930's Auto Shop

Thanks Thomas! I tried to get a good picture of the cover palte last night; not as easy as it looks... It's definitely a cast piece on mine, about 0.2" thick. Here's the best pic I could get of the cover plate and the hydraulic cylinder: Thanks again! Jeff

    Above 1200 Sq/FT Restored 1930's Auto Shop

Thomas and Chris, I will add my name to the list of folks who are honored and humbled that you're sharing this adventure with us... It's an addiction really; I can't wait to see more pictures! I've been following along the whole way, and while I didn't have much more to say than the...

    work benches... from scratch

RWhite, Casters I got from Grizzly Industrial Supply; someone else on the board was going to use them (can't remember who), and they looked perfect! They all swivel, and I got locking casters for 1 side of the bench, non-locking for the other. They were about $10 apiece for the casters...

    work benches... from scratch

Howdy! Long-time lurker, not a lot of posts, but... I just finished making my latest bench, and I'm kind of proud of it, so I had to share. Just as rwhite692 above, I heartily recommend used bowling lane. I managed to score 7 slabs of lane, approx. 7' each. I've built my first bench, and...

    Drill bit question

Thanks for the input guys! As mentioned, a uni-bit won't work; the spindle is ~ 1.5 inches thick. I'll probably steel myself for removing the spindles/crunching up some more of the pretty powerdoating on the sides, and take the spindles to a machine shop; just thought I'd ask here 1st. Thanks...

    Drill bit question

Hi folks, I've mostly been a lurker, but I now have a question I need some advice on... I'm trying to bolt disc brakes up to my '63.5 Galaxie, and I need to enlarge a hole (to 9/16" - really straightening a tapered hole) in the spindle to fit 1 of the caliper bolts on. The spindles are...

Adding height to existing garage--lifting the roof?

I was faced with the same decision a few months ago; I have a 30x40 shop in the backyard with 10' ceilings (standard engineered trusses), and I wanted more height. Discussed the option of taking off the roof, etc. Ended up actually have a truss company make me a full set of scissor trusses...

    Silly Garage roofing question

Thanks for all the ideas, folks! I'll definitely consult a professional - I'll have our remodeling contractor do it (he knows people who know people, etc). It's great to have all the potential ideas to talk with him about, though. The walls of the shop are 8" thick concrete block, so I don't...

    Silly Garage roofing question

All, Been lurking on here for a couple of years - great site and info! I am finally potentially going to do a housing remodel, which may be a good time to get more ceiling height in my shop (depending on cash flow, etc). I've got a 30x40 cement block shop in the backyard with...
