    Welder

Not naked ,but welding squatting down can cause later discomfort...............well known fact that bigger rods shield more of the rays ,small rods are like TIG which will find any tiny thin patch or hole in your garments .................arc gouging is worst ,dont think youll be doing any on a...

    Welding Helmet Recommendations (Auto Darkening)

If you are working with others ....you need to be careful that no grinding sparks hits the inside of the glass of your helmet.....probably not glass but plastic as sparks (steel shards) melt right into the surface and ruin it ............Ive lost several view pieces this way.

    Welder

I was and am amazed at the power of the little inverter stick welders .......current draw from the house wiring seems to be minimal compared to the old 'box ' welders ...which dimmed the lights ,blew fuzes ,and produced near zero weld power..........I ve got two 400 amp Lincoln diesel...

1/4" sockets with or without detents

Old time sockets had a single drilled hole to engage the ball retainer ..........so if you wanted sticktion ,you needed to align the features....The ball groove is an extra forming operation not possible to include in a broached square or a pressure formed socket.

    Craftsman V Series...

Close the factory on profit projections ,yes ...........defective machines ? ....only way the machines would be defective is if labor costs exceeded estimates ..........much more likely is a management war, culture clash , power struggle at the top.

    The Tiny Tools Thread

small hatchets ,chisels ,and hand saws were common boys toys back in the day .........all with sharp edges so they worked just like a fullsized tool ,too.

JIS is an old outdated standard

The common JIS only pitches were small screws and commonly used in Jap motorbikes of the 1960s .......and Id also add ,these bikes had a reputation for having 'lead 'screws .......very soft steel screws that the cross point would ream out easily.

12x24 shed on slope, is a floating foundation on any good? (concrete blocks, camo blocks, deck blocks, etc)

No frost here ,but my shed was on a slope ,and excavated down to hard sandy clay .......solid in the dry when excavated ,but last 12 months been continuous rain ,and what was solid is now slush...........I excavated a cutoff trench on the high side to prevent water logging ,and arrest water...

    Non-Pro's, tool use questions

I was a diesel /plant/truck mechanic from 68 to 2014.....I never had any accumulation of fancy hand tools in roller cabs........just the basic spanners and sockets in a couple of ex army tool boxes on the back of my pickup..........very well worn too,no fancy sparkly chrome ...What I do have...

Trucks with 16 x 7 S-cam air brakes ...not pickups.

    Brake cleaner alternatives?

When I did truck brakes ,I used to smear the new drums with a handfull of chassis grease...........this stops them from developing the harmful dry scoring that destroys drums............on the 3 axle coaches ,the single tire tag axle has full size brakes ,and greased drums save tires from...

    Brake cleaner alternatives?

The brake shoes from my old crane resisted every kind of cleaner known.......even the old sure fire of soaking in gasoline and burning them off............600 grade worm gear oil dont come out easily.

    Disappointing Wright ratchet warranty experience

Chrome peels because the plate is thick ......on modern Asian sockets plate is so thin it cant peel ,and simply disintegrates into dust.

    Disappointing Wright ratchet warranty experience

So what exactly does "Lifetime warranty " actually mean ?............local tool place has a "Limited Industrial Use - 12 month warranty" which is more realistic ,but thats for battery tools...........manufacturers of solid metal tools still offer 'Lifetime Warranty ----at the makers...

    Disappointing Wright ratchet warranty experience

Interesting theory .....real world ,I had to submit a request for a $100 Honda fuel filter ,and after months waiting the board (yes ) rejected the request as being in the category 'I wasnt trying hard enough ' to save the company $100 ......so thats a $30/hr employee ,$25/hr office boss lady...
