Accel Junky's Dual Phase 3-Car Attached/Detached Build
Having just replaced my water heater I can tell you that 18" is no longer the code. Modern gas heater pilot lights have a dual interlock safety system which monitors for things like external fuel and ignition sources and kills the pilot if such a thing is encountered.
