    log splitter

Probably depends on the design. Old school fixed wedge horizontal splitter or newer hor/vert combo with a traveling wedge and fixed foot? I've got an old school 15ton horizontal that my folks bought when I moved out after high school and I'm 47 now. It was used then, I now have it, and splits...

How hard is it to bend round steel rod accurately?

I have the HF Tubing roller with SWAG upgrades. I also have the HF Compact Bender and a true Hossfeld Bender. Thats a lot of cash to outlay if this is a one off. Is this a rollercoaster/pinball track for a cannonball? For roughly 6ft in diameter in 1/2in hot roll I'd just make a form from...

Garage Ceiling Insulation for WIDE Spaced Rafters

Get the cheapest white 5 rib metal roofing you can find. Hang vapor barrier from the rafters. Run the metal perpendicular to the trusses/rafters. It will bridge 5ft, so your 3ft is no problem. Then blow in your insulation above it.

Preference on wire for trailer lights?

I just went through this on my 24ft goose. I bought prepackaged 7 conductor 14ga at about a $1/ft. The 7 conductor with all the same size was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than buying wire that was upsized for the 12V and Brake conductors. I also bought 2 of the trailer weatherproof junction boxes...

How to fix poorly drilled holes

Or ignore those jagged existing holes. Drill some new round "clean" holes for your grommets. The trailer builders are in a hurry so they blow the hole with a torch. They don't care about the wiring job either. Just as long as the lights work on your 1st drive home.

2x4 or 2x6 for joists in shed floor?

I use old chain link fencing for this. You can usually find it for FREE. Clear the spot of sod, level, etc with a perimeter 1ft wider than your shed. Put down commercial rated landscape fabric. Lay your chain link down on top and make a mat. Fill your gravel and rake it level. It's almost...

Need Advice On Wood Burner Heater

Most important things to remember!! It is a "workshop" not a "garage" anytime you talk to your insurance agent. You mention you want to install a wood burner in your garage and they will soon be cancelling your policy. Discuss with your agent. Around here in MO you can still have wood heat...

Need to build new ATV trailer for firewood

I like that you used Golf Cart tires!! I think for DIY yard items they are a great option. With everyone getting jacked up Golf Carts I can find new takeoffs in my area for $10ea. With an 800lbs+ weight rating they are good for weight. Plus the 4 lug wheels use a common 4 on 4in mounting so...

Wiring my winch for use in my garage

Are you "pulling" or "lifting" items? Big difference in winch/hoist application and your safety. Is this a temporary need or longer term? Either way you need something to anchor too to do your pull/lift!! For a temp need: using a 12V winch a charged battery and a quality pair of jumper cables...

    Vapor Barrier/Insulation for Metal Building

Insulation is always worth "something" but depends on how much time you spend in the shop vs the cost of the install. The most benefit you will see is roof insulation. 2nd would be any South/West facing wall that gets afternoon sun exposure. That vinyl face is a vapor barrier. If you put...

    Welding and fab table build

That grid wall retail display racks that were really popular for awhile makes great shelving. Sturdy and does not catch dust. I also used it as a vertical brace across the back of my table as a rack for C-Clamps, etc.

    1/2” or 3/4” for welding/fab table?

4x6 with a sturdy frame, 4in over hang for clamping, and a couple receiver tubes at the corners for a vise mount etc. Thickness is up to how cheap you can find a drop for. I made A LOT of side money using a well supported piece of 1/4 in plate on some metal saw horses. Just depends on what...

Can I use old diesel in my oil tank furnace?

I'd get a Mr Funnel and "polish" the fuel. Run that diesel through the funnel filter and any debris or water will be separated. 7 month old fuel is not old, 7 yrs I'd just filter it and still use it. Diesel does not really go bad, just gets contaminated with water/algae/rust.

    Insulating an old pole barn

The answer is always spray foam, but sometimes the budget does not allow. What are the wall heights? What spacing are your trusses on? If the trusses are 5ft or less and you can deal with the ceiling height being at the bottom chord of the trusses, then running 5 rib metal roofing or...
