    40x60 shop layout suggestions.

Yep, need some drawings. Just to give ideas and share my design thoughts: I built a 42x60 a couple years ago. Split it into 3 "rooms". One, 20x21, is a welding area. Wanted space that was dedicated to being junk and flammable item free. Being the smallest area of the shop, I plan to put in...

What Used to Be Bolted to the Floor Here?

Someone with a cable locator could clamp onto that conduit and trace it as far as it goes. Maybe find a plumber, electrician, telco guy that has a locator?? A little too far from me. At least can find out if it heads off towards the house or the road. Or across the road.... what year was...

Garage door sizes for new shop

My building is 42x60. Doors are on the short (gable ends). I forget the cost difference, but it was cheaper to do them there than on the long sides. It is a red iron building, there are diagonal bracing cables that would have to be worked around in the side walls. I put 2 14x14 doors on the...

Which implement the most useful for hobby farm and polebarn build?

My tool of choice for the slab/foundation would be a mid-to-full size excavator with hydraulic thumb, and a dump truck to move the concrete. A good operator could be in and out of there in a few hours. I have a tractor/fel/backhoe and recently tore out a 4'x75' concrete walkway. Did the job...

Long distance shop move. Sell and repurchase or move it all

I moved my shop, only 7 miles, a couple of years ago. I rented a dry van trailer. Ended up keeping it for almost a year until I got settled and had time to sort and unload (still ended up buying a conex for permanent storage). If you have a spot for it at the new place, I'd think about buying...

Horrific new slab pour, PROPER corrective action advise needed!

That's more than one hot load. How may delivery trucks were there 2? 3? My guess they didn't have forms/labor/rebar/remesh ready when the trucks got there, and made them wait a while. I dropped by to check on and help a friend one time on a pour (column piers). Two trucks were sitting...

Closing on Property: Septic perc test?

I knew the area where I bought land would be hard to find a perc location, so made that a condition of purchase. Hired a soils engineer to look it over and ID two potential locations, then paid county for one trip to come out and do the permit approval. Only after signed and paid permit was in...

Who sections off parts of the garage for 'dirty' rooms?

I walled off a 20x22 welding, cutting, grinding room. More for fire hazard than cleanliness. No clutter, no cardboard, no flammables in there. Have a separate section for RV parking, then the main shop that can get as dirty as it wants to get.

    Is 24x24 too small?

I was in a 24x24 for 17 years. Blew past my 5-year plan. Pretty much it was filled up with tool cabinets and machinery. Had room to work like at the drill press, but had to step over a lot of projects and parts all the time. Try and go "up" as much as possible -- tall tool cabinets, tall...

    Stone barn.... Is this realistic?

Is the stone going to be carefully dismantled, loaded without damage, maybe palletized, and unloaded and stacked? Or is the wall going to be knocked down with an excavator, loaded into dump trucks using the hydraulic thumb, then dumped in one big unsorted pile? First way will yield usable...

    Handling larger sheets of Drywall

Glad you aren't going to kill yourself in the future. We built a house 2 years ago now. 3000sf. Sheetrock crew had all the rock hung, walls and ceilings, in under 2 days. I think maybe done by lunch the second day. Those guys did it every day, and could move fast. No wasted effort or...

    Bearded respirator?

Correct... Definitely don't use standard air compressor air for breathing. Suspended oils, no matter in what quantity, will ruin lungs. Permanently kind of ruined. The supplied air systems use a dedicated compressor, that is designed for breathing systems.

    Mezzanine in metal shop!

What do you plan to use the space for? Light storage, heavy storage, office area, etc? What is your slab thickness/configuration? You might need to consider cutting out for proper footings, depending on your weight requirements. That appears to be fairly lightweight construction (compared to...

    Bearded respirator?

No seal to worry about. On the hard facepiece for example, there is a fabric flap/collar that has elastic edge that fits loosely under your jaw. Positive air flow from top to bottom keeps the nasties out. Same with the paint hood. Air enters up top, comes down across your face, then out at...

    Bearded respirator?

I, too, have the beard problem. I went with a supplied air system, mfg by Allegro. https://www.zoro.com/allegro-supplied-air-pump-package-1-ppl-14-hp-9245-01/i/G1394321/?q=G1394321 They have different kits, single- or multi-person. Different hoods, etc. I got the standard face shield...
