    Ever evolving garage plans...

Sorry I missed your query TractorJeff; my studs are just over 12' putting me at about 12' 4 1/2" to top of ceiling. I went with an 8:12 pitch for the roof.

    Ever evolving garage plans...

Ah, OK, same thing I did more or less. I'd advise going in on a weekday, and asking to speak to the estimator; the guys at the materials desk can drive the software but the estimator can do more, including finding anything that needs to be special order (e.g. non-stocked overhead doors) and get...

    Ever evolving garage plans...

Back while I was waiting for delivery from Menards, I thought it might be useful to get the materials list from the estimate (or the portion I actually placed the order for) into Sketchup so I could figure out which materials might be tight (or short). This is the 3D representation of what I...

TractorJeff, I don't know if you ever went back to the begginning of the thread, but I started posting in the early planning stages, long before the project got started. I got a lot of useful advice as I worked out what I was going to be doing. This building isn't from a Menards kit; I...

    Ever evolving garage plans...

[continued...] For the second wall section things went a lot faster, due to the lessons I learned on the previous section. I started by measuring and marking j-bolt locations on the sill plate, then stud locations on the sill and top plate. There was one conflict that needs to be addressed...

    Ever evolving garage plans...

Thursday didn't see any framing get done, as I spent the day thinking about the stud / j-bolt conflict while running errands and generally getting done everything I could that wasn't this... Friday I decided to just get on with what I could, so I started nailing off the first 12' section of...

    Build site: tool management?

Found my solution... I was at tractor supply and stumbled on one of these tool storage boxes mis-shelved where one of these should have been. They had to honour the price as marked on the shelf (per company policy and, I think, by law), which they did. I was going to let them off the hook, but...

    Stud length?

Yep, that was what I was thinking. I don't think that's needed, either for the sheathing or the drywall. I do need some horizontal blocking in the stud cavities with 12' studs, but that's just to provide a fire break. As far as I know no backing for drywall seems is needed.

    Stud length?

Concrete was spec'd to come to 6" above grade but, after the contractor finished backfilling and grading I think I have less than that. I want to hold the sheathing up as much as I can because of that. I'm thinking maybe a little metal flashing between sheathing and sill plate / concrete; full...

    Stud length?

Right; and it's not just the drywall, it's extra work for sheathing, potentially siding too (?). But I think the extra height is worth those hassles.

    Stud length?

The devil is in the details! Yeah, agreed, getting the flashing right is key.

Congrats! Getting quotes for the concrete work took forever here, good to hear you've cleared that hurdle! Do you have a build thread going yet?

    Ever evolving garage plans...

Thanks, I'm excited to see walls starting to go up! I really need to get a set of forks, I could have used them so many times already. I really need to just pull the trigger and buy a set...

    Ever evolving garage plans...

Yeah, that might be the best compromise. This is a non-bearing gabel wall so I have little leeway in terms of structural integrity, but I suspect this isn't going to be the only time I encounter this problem...

    Stud length?

Oh, the irony! right? I've been measuring boards, including one that must have come from a different batch as it is noticably darker in colour, and all have been exactly 12' 7/16" so at this point I think I'm comfortable not trimming. Then I'll find that one board that's 1/4" short and start...
