    How do you re-engineer trusses?

As a truss designer I'll tell you not to bother calling the local truss plant, unless you know that they built those trusses. I've been told that its a liability issue and I guess a little bit of not wanting to deal with somebody else's product. If you called me I would give you a name of a...

    truss change ??

With out talking to an structural engineer, I wouldn't go cutting up your trusses. By cutting out pieces of the truss you change the way the truss works. Remember what works for someone else may not work for you. It depends on the on a lot of factors, but what do I know I just design the things.

Can you notch an I joist?

You can not notch, drill or otherwise damage the top and bottom flanges, no matter what the size or spacing of the joist. This is the number one repair detail our company has to deal with on I joist floors. But check the manufactures hole cutting guide maybe your manufacturer will allow it...

    For you truss experts

Attic trusses are a special truss, typically by code (where I am) the top chord must be at least 2x6 and the bottom chord must be at least 2x8. The floor size in the room will be similar to a joist in a house, so if you don't like the bounce with a 2x10 spanning 14'-0" the truss wouldn't work...

    size of Perlins

Check with your truss supplier, or look on your truss shop drawing. The standard note on my truss drawing it states right on the drawing, "In lieu of rigid sheathing use 2x4 purlins @ 24" o/c" I would doubt that 1x material would cut it, unless you asked the truss manufacturer to design the...

Replacement Truss Spec sheets? Need Help..

As a truss designer I get this issue a lot, contractor doesn't have the drawings, etc etc, your situation is a little trickier because you can't call your supplier. I would try calling another local plant and seeing if they would help you out. (they may not because it's not their truss but you...

12' ceilings or scissor trusses?? or??

It shouldn't be too big of an issue for your truss guys to design the trusses for the door header to be flushed up into the trusses, I don't design too many trusses like that but it can be done (for a price), and it's not too hard. Your builder might not like it because its a bit of a pain...

Help with header strengh for a beam.

So, I'm not sure if I understand this right but I'll take a stab at it. I think you are running along the wall with the longest span 14' and coming out into the garage 4'. I ran a 2x10 joist on the software I use for work and it really doesn't work 24" o/c at 40psf live load and 10psf dead...
