Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Amazing... I don't think I would've ever figured out how to calculate the load specific to the beam. Does the angle cut out of the left-side of my 4x10 to fit under the roof have any bearing on any of your calculations? Or is that not compromising the strength of the beam as much as I would...

Ack! Thought I added that -- 174" Thanks, Mike

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Thanks for your offer, I'll gladly accept! Whipped this up with all the requested dimensions (click for full version): Wood species is all doug fir. The far end 4x10 is bolted into the side of the wall, into every stud, 16 o.c. for the entire span of the header. Current load (1550lbs.): -...

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Ah, yessir, thanks! Crawdad's comments do raise some concerns, though, as it is a hipped roof. I consistently find myself being paralyzed with paranoia as to how to proceed after these threads :) I'm trying to reach out to an acquaintance who worked on the software side of a structural...

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Thanks duc, can you elaborate (or at least define, pardon my ignorance) what the hip is? I'm having trouble picturing the overall design you're describing.

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

This is very interesting -- I was already planning to wall in that area later on when I start drywalling. I hadn't thought that part through at all yet, so I never considered the additional strength I'd get if I built the wall atop the existing beam... also, I imagine I'd have to tie that into...

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Thanks Les! So your beam is beefier than mine and you are likely supporting less weight than I (assuming they aren't ginormous motors you're pulling ;) ).

Advice req: Sistering 4x10x18' unsupported header

Hey folks, Apologies for breaking this out of my last thread, but I think (+hope) this is enough of a departure to see if I can solicit some additional advice. I have a long header with an open span supporting a storage loft: Supported on opposite ends by 4x4s (note one end has an angle cut...

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

Before I go and source this lumber, a couple more questions: 1) How best to sister such large timbers? Just a bunch of lag bolts? Any advice in particular? 2) Should it be another 4x10 or is there a smaller size (3x10? 2x10?) that would be sufficient? This is more for the material handling...

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

I was hoping for a little more consensus amongst the participants here, but such is life :) I'll likely be looking into picking up an additional 4x10 + 4x4s to sister up against the one there now. And perhaps I'll do that and not change my plan up with regards to the 2x8 joists*, so I can...

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

D'oh -- was hoping not to hear that... It's a single, solid 4x10... 18' span, only supported at the ends. If I had to guess, there's less than 1000lbs of stuff up there, with more of the heavy stuff located towards the back (away from the open span).

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

The flooring is run perpendicular to the joists (woo!), so there's no seam there. The OSB is 1/2" (but you can't walk on it, not enough clearance) The headers are 4x10s... on the far side of the wall they're bolted into the wall studs: But on the garage-door side, it's a great big wide span...

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it's very much appreciated. bczygan: Everything you said makes a lot of sense – thanks! soj: 2x8, ~14.5' in length... the lights themselves don't take up all the space, not exactly at least, but the brackets that hold them in place swing over the troffer...

Sanity check: Attic joist framing Q

Hey folks, I'm pretty sure this is all OK, but for my car's sake, I'll make sure before proceeding. Anyway, the previous owner built the following storage attic above the garage: In other words: And I'm replacing all the lights with the 1x4 2 light troffer setups seen being test fitted...

    Let's see the wood shops!

Thanks for the compliments folks, it's all pretty low budget, and we've only been at this house for a year (our first house... you should've seen my shop attempt at our previous place -- apartment carport with a chain wrapped around the table saw). As for the organization, it only looks like...
