    Danger from buying cheap tools

I've not seen serious safety defects in most cheap tools. I think it relatively unlikely due to the liability the company would face in a lawsuit. If Harbor Freight customers were frequently being blinded, lacerated, and hospitalized due to failures of the tools, Harbor Freight would have long...

Do any companies use date codes on their ratchets?

Most companies now use a simplified system: "Made in USA" = Old "Made in China" = New

    Anyone Using Drafting Cabinets?

I've worked at a firm that had them for C and D-size blueprints. The were were not nearly so strong. It seemed that they really relied on the equal distribution of weight one would get with paper. They didn't even have ball bearing drawer slides. I'm sure that they vary. Just something to...

    Anyone Using Drafting Cabinets?

I like the idea, but be aware that the drawers are probably not made to hold as much weight as toolbox drawers. You might have to limit what you put in them and maybe even line the bottom with hardboard if the sheet metal deflects too much under load. I still think it's a great idea to snag a...

    Impact vs Chrome swivels

I've got a 3/8" air ratchet, but not an impact gun. I've never seen a need for an impact gun that small. I could always put a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter on one of several 1/2" impact guns I have (assuming that the socket only fit on a 3/8" drive).

    PVC pipe air line explodes

Sun isn't the only source of UV. Fluorescent lights often put out substantial UV.

    Trying not to get robbed

That's the idea behind engraving valuables and putting up signs to that effect; it makes the "valuables" a whole lot less valuable to someone intent on stealing and reselling them.

    Trying not to get robbed

Engrave your Valuables There are two kinds of thieves: Those who know you own a specific thing that they want (e.g. a toolbox full of Snap-On tools, a Van Gogh painting, etc.) and those who are just opportunists who want to steal something of value, often to sell for drugs. The former kind...

    Trying not to get robbed

The best thing you could do is get a copy of a neighbor's key and tape it to your front door with a map to their house. You don't have to make it impossible for a thief to get into your house -- you just have to make theirs easier for them to get into your neighbor's house. Seriously, though...

    Craftsman tools

No, it's not overplayed. Rather than buy the Chinese-made Harbor Freight hex bit sockets, I paid considerably more to Lowe's for matching, made-in-the-USA SAE and metric 3/8" drive hex bit socket sets. They were nicely machined tools with a lifetime warranty with a big "Made In The USA"...

    Craftsman tools

I know that China has the capability to make high quality tools using high quality steel. But they will also produce low grade tools at a low price. And that's what bothers many people about the Chinese Craftsman tools. Sears didn't just outsource the manufacturing. They clearly, in many...

    Craftsman tools

No, I just worked at a firm that built satellites, space probes, and rockets, and that employed electron microscopes for QA and failure analysis. What would I know about precision? Sarcasm aside, I understand that component A can be much more precisely machined than component B and still have...

    Craftsman tools

That is a result of lobbyists for big business successfully quashing legislation, taxes, tariffs, and regulations that would penalize outsourcing. Businesses, by and large, don't give a flying **** about the good of their employees or the country in which they are headquartered. If they did...
