It should be the same, physics don't change. :)
Horsepower = torque x rpm.
Older motors usually have lower rpm, which means higher torque (for a same hp motor).
A few things to consider:
* Make sure that the safety valve is of the same pressure as the original one!
* Is the new pressure switch of the same (electrical) rating as the old one? If it's smaller. expect to see problems in the future (burned out pressure switch).
Can't you hear where the...
It's a bit of a gamble, and I think $250 is a bit too much. For < $200 I would do it probably.
How does he know it is overheating? Like A_PMech said.. compressors run hot, it's normal..
People don't turn in an air compressor because it 'runs hot'. There should be something else, like 'it pops...
Subscribed! I'm interested!
VERY nice setup so far!
I might be able to help, if needed... I have experience with (backup) generators up to 1000 kW and automatic change over boxes/systems.. (http://www.atlascopco.com/Images/Generatory%20QAC1000_tcm176-768667.pdf to give you an impression)...
Like zkling said, the older two stage air compressors are built like tanks.
New models are built as 'disposables', especially the cheaper ones.
For good ol -made in the usa- quality reciprocating air compressor, I'd always recommend Quincy compressors. Also check out the buying guides here...
Be very careful with a tank like that!
Find another old broken air compressor with a good tank and use that good tank for this air compressor.
It doesn't have to be exactly the same size. Bigger is better. A little smaller isn't a problem either.
Better first check if the compressor/motor is...
Did you manage to fix it already?
Here is a page that describes exactly how the pressure switch works (including photo's).

Looks like it's exactly the same pressure switch as you have.
It is probably easiest to install a new pressure switch with an attached unloader valve...
Although the functioning will be not be exactly the same.. the original centrifugal unloader will only close the air blow-off when a certain RPM is reached (so called 'delayed unloader valve').
But I...
You probably solved your problem by now... but for all other visitors reading this thread.. here is some great info about air compressor pressure switches:
