Has anybody here built their garage THEMSELVES?

I built mine over 2 years. Excavation and concrete were hired out, but the rest was done by me and my family. Take your time and ask lots of questions along the way. It's the most satisfying thing I've ever done.

Just when I thought it was over with....my wife suggested she would like a pool. So much for all that grass seed after the build. I'll keep you posted.

Game Day: Super bowl will be hosted this year in the loft. The guy with the biggest TV gets to host in our family. In fact 10' big. In the planning stages of the loft, I framed in a cavity over the front window for the big screen to sit in. With some black out curtains pulled and the flip...

Hot & Cold: Heat for the garage is a Modine 75,000 BTU shop heater. It's overkill for my shop especially with the glass doors pulled over in the shop. However, it's only on for a few minutes to get up to temperature. Really efficient. Operates on a digital thermostat. Heat for the loft is...

Earthworks: I had to separate the garage heat from the loft heat. I was going to put in a house forced air furnace under the stairs to do both spaces. Apparently this not a good idea pulling cold air from your garage and pumping it into the loft. If there are fumes in your garage, it would...

Thanks Dubber. Good catch, we are guilty of drinking Ontario wines too. There's all kinds of ways to do the cork top counters. I chose to use glass as a covering, but some have done it with clear acrylic mixtures too. The glass will last a long time and it's easy to keep clean. Not to...

The bar. I knew this was the spot for my bar top, but really didn't know what to put there. After many drawings and lots of conversation, this is what I came up with.... with the help from my buddy 'Schoonz'. I purchased a keg-erator that comes complete with fridge, tap and air tank. From...

    Concrete Prices getting quotes

Cobbler & Adjustable: How did you guys make out with pricing/purchase? Our concrete prices in the Niagara area are out of control because of the Hydro Tunnel work and hotel construction. The concrete suppliers have jacked their prices to take advantage of our government dollars... I would...

Garage Door travel and bottom seal

Here's a suggestion for your weather strip.... I slid some pipe insulation inside the weather strip to keep it from flattening out. The pipe insulation comes in many diameters sizes - black foam in 4' lengths that you wrap around pipes to keep warm. I used a little dish soap to get them...
