    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Standard 2 car turned shop , Thanks Jack!

Hey Paul- Thanks for the inspiration for my shelf (attached)! Next up, cabinets. Question - How is the temp in the garage on these chilly Chicago days/nights? I'm considering insulating and drywalling my garage walls, but I like the open ceiling. Knowing that the ceiling is probably the...

    powder coating?

Leanna is spot on. Powder coating is AMAZING when done correctly. I can't emphasize the "when done correctly" enough. I familiarized myself with powder coating last year when I was refinishing a childhood Tonka truck for my son. The first truck I did got the primer and rattle can treatment...

    Powder Coating Help

Those were tiny little fibers (not visible pre-powder) left on the substrate from the cotton/shop towels I was using to wipe on the denatured alcohol. Then, when coated with powder, they were visible and looked like fuzzy little twigs. Now that the towels are out of the process the finishes...

    Powder Coating Help

*UPDATE* CudaChick1968 aka Leanna saved my tail! First off - if I ever have anything of actual value (IE: A visible or important car part), it's going to Leanna at Phoenix Specialty Coatings and I recommend that you check it out and give her your business. She's a true pro and I'm grateful...

    Powder Coating Help

That's what I can't figure out! The metal is clean when I hang it. Then I start spraying and those twig-looking things accumulate. They aren't in the raw powder. Could static be attracting sawdust from inside the shed? The weird thing is that I can see those things forming as I'm layering...

    Powder Coating Help

UPDATE: I had a chance to make the changes discussed earlier in the thread: - Added an inline moisture filter - Pre-baked at 450 for 30 minutes - Used clean, powder-free gloves to handle the metal - Emptied the compressor of any water (there was not any) The results are the same (see the last...

    Powder Coating Help

Thanks Tim! Does location in the oven make a difference? Most of my parts sit higher up in the oven, which is probably hotter than the center. Would higher temps cause any of these issues?

Good stuff - thank you. Next batch will get pre-baked. And I'll track down a cheap in-line filter. Thank you.

    Powder Coating Help

Thank you for the comment. Air is coming directly via a Craftsman pancake compressor to the HF gun. I haven't been outgassing or torching prior. Maybe I will swap out the black for yellow and see if the yellow finish looks any different. One note - When I spray it seems like its kind of hard...

    Powder Coating Help

Hey All - For those with any powder coating experience, I have some questions. First a quick background... I'm restoring 3 1980's metal Tonka trucks for my kids. Last winter I did the front loader and rattle canned it - it turned out great, but I wanted a more durable finish on these 3 and...

Tonka Truck Resto - Paint Advice Needed

Thanks Junkman! This is very helpful and some great tips - I especially like the idea of painting the windshield black. I bought the replica last time and that will save a few bucks.

Tonka Truck Resto - Paint Advice Needed

It has to come apart 100% anyway to blast the rust off all the little nooks. It'll get a new sticker set, new rivets and top hat nuts when it's all painted. I might give the powder coat route a shot. Looks like I can get a used gun system and toaster oven for ~$100. And I bet I can find a...

Tonka Truck Resto - Paint Advice Needed

For those recommending Powder Coating - can you give me some thoughts on a novice doing this? Also, will the HF Powder Coating Kit get the job done to a decent quality or should I look elsewhere? Thanks for the feedback so far!
