I called Mr Heater and they said to make sure there is 18" clearance from the middle of the heater straight back perpendicular until it hits a wall and then a 1" clearance from the back corners of the heater to the side walls. So it sounds like I can push it back in the corner like I wanted to.

When installing one of these heaters in the corner, how is the 18" minimum rear clearance measured? Is it from the middle of the back of the unit to the corner of the walls or from each corner of the heater going back 18" until you hit a wall?

The brackets provide the 1" clearance needed. I confirmed this by contacting Mr. Heater. Not sure about your gas question. I do have another question on venting. The 50k BTU unit only requires a 3" vent for vertical venting. Is it acceptable to go bigger to a 4" vent? I was thinking that...
