When installing one of these heaters in the corner, how is the 18" minimum rear clearance measured? Is it from the middle of the back of the unit to the corner of the walls or from each corner of the heater going back 18" until you hit a wall?

I assume you are planning to back it into a corner and that both back corners of the unit will be less than 18" from the side walls?
How far down from the ceiling are you hanging it?

The rear clearance is for air flow, so that a circulation of room air can be created when the unit is running.

I called Mr Heater and they said to make sure there is 18" clearance from the middle of the heater straight back perpendicular until it hits a wall and then a 1" clearance from the back corners of the heater to the side walls. So it sounds like I can push it back in the corner like I wanted to.

Yup, so long and you don't impeede the airflow coming in from below. Because basically, all of the air is going to come from below the heater (and above if you didn't mount directly to ceiling)

BUT. How are you going to achieve your 18" clearance from the side access panel if you push the heater all the way back into the corner?
