Reducing Effective Span on Roof Support Beam

"Yes I could hire and engineer, buy a proper LVL, etc, I would not be asking if that was an option." hmm.... why is a removable post a bad idea, your comment is telling that I will get no useful information from you.

Reducing Effective Span on Roof Support Beam

It is a simple question about rafters (load) on a beam that needs no additional context. The textbook analysis shows the rafter weight averaged to its center. The picture shows now two groups that averaged to their center, which is no longer in the center of the beam but more to the edge...

Reducing Effective Span on Roof Support Beam

What context is needed to determine the effects of techniques mentioned on the beam load? I already said I'm not buying a LVL etc. An adult might have read that and not give a snide remark to use a LVL.

Reducing Effective Span on Roof Support Beam

    1. Can you just move into an existing building? That would be easier. 2. Even easier, maybe not build cars anymore, that would resolve the issue. If you are renting an existing structure that has rotted beams with center support posts, I can't help see 1 and 2 above.

Reducing Effective Span on Roof Support Beam

In my current garage build I'm thinking of how to reduce the required beam strength. I need room to move two cars around inside the 24x24 space, so having support posts in the middle is highly undesired. I'm doing a sloped flat roof. The first thing was I went from supporting the rafters...

    Cheap lift?

I bought a used-once 12k two post that 'twisted' first time lifting a big truck, and fixed it to use with 5k vehicles. This was the first lift I've had after 20 years working on my cars without one, and what a joy it was to have it. Unfortunately I had to sell it as 13ft would not fit in the new...

Support for a beam in a sloped roof

A flat roof is easier if you use corrugated roof panels. I did a chicken coop recently with plastic roof panels, and the peak was a pain. I would have made it flat, but then you need longer rafters, whereas you can use almost half the length if you have a peaked roof. The ranch had lots of old...

Support for a beam in a sloped roof

Pics really help, the rafter beam is held up at the ends by a king stud and a jack stud, where the king stud goes to the top of the beam and the jack stud next to it is under the beam holding it up. So if I get what your asking about is the king stud? Should you angle the cut on it? I don't...

Garage doors: Call me crazy, but I think I'm building my own

I just checked on amazon (which I hate to buy from) and got these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092DT8ZW4/?tag=atomicindus08-20 since they will roll on fence "top rail" which I have some, or the rollbar tubing. They don't pivot, but fabricating stuff is what I enjoy. I have some delrin that...

Garage doors: Call me crazy, but I think I'm building my own

I posted in my intro thread about making horizontal bifold doors from a sectional rollup. While they fold outward, they don't stick out much until they are opened a lot and by then the opening is up high, so a car can park right in front. Maybe not a big suv backed in, but no worries about...

Long Timer Reader, First Time Poster...DIY Horizontal BiFold Garage Door.

If you want to open them by hand. If you want to open them by hand, particularly from the outside. With my setup, it can only be opened from the inside, but I have a side door to get into the garage and then the garage door is 'locked' without having any kind of lock.

Long Timer Reader, First Time Poster...DIY Horizontal BiFold Garage Door.

Found a couple pics of the hanger door. This is fully open. I really need to move up the hinges on top so it will open further to match the garage opening. That is no easy once the door is all assembled. I'm also going to replace the chain hoist with a powered winch, as it is quite slow to...

    Craigslist Dreamers

What I don't understand is why anyone would buy 'antique outboards' for huge sums. Obviously they don't want to power a dinghy with them, what is more useless than an outboard motor that doesn't start. Show piece in the billionaire yacht smoking room? Not these junks, if they were all...

Long Timer Reader, First Time Poster...DIY Horizontal BiFold Garage Door.

I seem to have lost all my footage of it But perhaps I take some pics of it tomorrow to post here, although right now stuff from the move is packed up against it, so can't really open it right now. I know that description was rather wordy.

    Dump trailer build, maybe?

I recently built my second dump trailer. The first one was my rampless car trailer that has a hinged back half that drops down instead of a ramp (have video on it) I just changed the back to fold back onto the front so it then became a dump trailer. I used a levered lift (call it a single leg...
