I've always used a piece of rubber hose pushed on to the top of the plug. It allows me to feel the threads by hand. Then I put a socket on it. I also have a Chevy 1500 with V8.

When I need an inspection mirror larger than the telescoping one I have in the toolbox, I use an old motorcycle mirror threaded into a piece of aluminum rod. To get a good image, make sure it isn't a convex mirror.
