Install a ceiling and put in a drop down staircase, this gives you a place to store items, as well as a place to hang some nice florescent lights! Other good things it hides all your junk.

If you can get a copy of Microsoft Visio (even 2003) you can do some really simple-to-elaborate layouts. You can scale the building, as well as the "tools". Think of electronic graph paper. Good Luck...
