Steven....9 foot ceilings on the first floor. It is a 10/12 pitch. Funny that more people don't build 2 stories. The cost was nearly nothing to add a enough height for a second story.
The posts are anchored with a J bolt embedded in the concrete and then a simpson post base bolted to that. Pretty simple as long as you plan your post before your concrete pour. The 1" stand off of the post base keeps any rot away.

The loft has a 4 foot knee wall so, yes, it does provide a nice space. I'll try to grab some interior pics but it is embarrassingly messy at the moment. I'm having it insulated and prepped for heat.
Here is my summer 2013 project. I did most of it myself. I had a contractor do the slab and had some friends throwing on roofing and siding. It was a ton of work but happy with the final product.
