I've done this a number of times with thin gauge sheet metal on my plasma table, especially when needing to verify something that a someone else "dimensioned".

They are even more useful when there is a chain hook on the same link as the slip hook, that way you can adjust the leg lengths for an unbalanced / odd mounting point lift.
