Funky Short Chains - Design Intent?

Still sorting and clearing out the garage. Found a pair of these holding up a bunch of electrical conduit.

I can use them for a bunch of things, but am wondering what tasks this format was specifically designed for.

They're chain slings. You put the hooks on the 4 corners of something, then put the rings into a hook from a crane, or something. They allow for a more distributed lift.

Many time manufacturers of engines, pumps, machines, etc will include them with their crated product.

I used to have dozens of lift slings that came from Caterpillar 12 and 16 cylinder engines. They were used to put the engine on the skid, crated with the engine, used to remove the engine from the skid, and never used again.

They are even more useful when there is a chain hook on the same link as the slip hook, that way you can adjust the leg lengths for an unbalanced / odd mounting point lift.
