I had thought about that...that might wind up being my only options, but I'm not sure I like it. I just don't see it holding up well for thousands of miles and thousands of shifts.

So I've started cranking out some shift knobs on my lathe, but am having a problem finding good thread inserts to use. Most of the ones I have made are going on T5 transmissions, and the most common thread (it seems) for those is 3/8-16. That's no problem, the local hardware store keeps those...

I've made a few things so far. Several shift knobs, a cup, etc. I need to figure out a better way to finish the knobs other than shellac. Turns out shellac bubbles up and out of the wood when the interior of the car gets hot in the sun. I also just ordered a Barracuda 2 4-jaw chuck...

Cranked out a few shift knobs and a cedar bowl. I need to buy some shellac to finish them off with. Also, I have a PSI Woodworking chuck on the way.

There's actually a window directly above where the lathe is that just faces the backyard. I need to dig my huge hoss window vent fan out of storage (1/2hp motor...on a fan!) and stick it up there. Chips will fall, dust will get sucked straight out.

The guy I bought the lathe from gave me a couple blanks...one basswood and one cedar. Had better results with the basswood. The cedar was very loose grained. I'll probably swing by the wood warehouse in town today and pick up some maple or walnut to throw on tonight.
