    Sealing FIR plywood benchtop

Hi everyone, I made a benchtop out of sanded fir plywood. I also got the General Finishes Arm-R-Seal oil Urethane Top Coat from Rockler: https://www.rockler.com/general-finishes-arm-r-seal-urethane-top-coat-gloss I used this top coat on a Maple plywood and it was great. But when I tried to...

    Raising a Garage Roof

I would sister in 2x4s to the original framing. In effect it would be almost like a 4x4 stud. Do you think i can get away with it or still 2x6? I didn’t want to replace the original framing.

    Raising a Garage Roof

Hi everyone! Here’s take 2 of the most serious project I’ve ever done. The plan is to raise the entire garage roof intact up about 6 feet. I would cut the existing 2x4 studs right at the sill. Then once the roof is jacked up i would sister in new 14 foot studs and sill. Then i would lower and...

    Blocking between roof joists

Great advice! Thank you guys! It wasn't in the build plans, but after the plan review they added solid blocking in as a requirement. So now I will be adding the blocking. Thank you all!

    Blocking between roof joists

The building official did a walk through and advised adding blocking between the rafters to prevent lateral movement. The original trusses were cut and a ridge beam was added. Then 2x6 were sistered to the 2x4 from the original trusses to provide the load strength required locally.

    Blocking between roof joists

Hi guys! I need to add blocking between joists in my garage. Do you have suggestions on where and how to put blocking between the hoists? I’ve attached a photo of the current joists setup.

Can I get away with 2x4s for a two story structure or is 2x6 required?

Thank you all for all inputs! Especially when talking about footers. I will be having and engineer do all the load analysis, but I want to retain as much of the original structure as possible and that is why I was asking about 2x4 vs 2x6. I live in the northwest btw.

Can I get away with 2x4s for a two story structure or is 2x6 required?

My wife and I are about to close on our house in a couple weeks. Until we actually close I can't really get into the construction of the house :( For the meantime, I am assuming that the current garage structure is build with 2x4s. I am looking to raise the roof and add a floor for an office...

Electrical Boxes for Double Plywood Exterior Wall

I actually haven't done anything yet - I was going to use the little wings on the front with a screw. If that doesn't sit flush enough to seal with the outdoor outlet cover, I'll go with the smart boxes. Those are special order at my local HD.

Electrical Boxes for Double Plywood Exterior Wall

Hi guys, I am trying to install an exterior outlet and have run into an interesting problem. For the outside wall I doubled up on plywood with OSB on the first layer and T1-11 on the outside layer. This adds up to just under 1" of total thickness for the wall. Now when I try to put in old...
