Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

According to the manufacturer, it's supposed to be regular gear oil. Someone else has definitely been in there since it came out of the factory. No manufacturer is going to use that much sealant unnecessarily (they could have probably sealed 3 or 4 units with that amount). Also, the neck of the...

Camera angle, probably because of the beveled edge and concave teeth.

Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

The bad news is after all that, the upper bearing is fine! Haven't removed the shaft to inspect the lower bearing, but opening this up could have been for nothing. Well, maybe not nothing - the lubricant looks like pudding. I think whoever was in here last used a ton of grease on assembly, then...

Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

I've got some good news and some bad news... The good news is I got the case apart. @PCustoms recommendation to use a credit card really sped things up. I throw all of my expired cards into my toolbox to be used as scrapers, and once I made enough clearance with the razor blade to get one in...

Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

That could be an option, but it would be a last resort. The holes aren't tapped at all on either side of the case - the bolt goes through both halves and a nut is used to fasten. The razor blade seems to be working (slowly). I almost have enough clearance to get my thin flat chisel in there.

Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

Decided to brute force it with a razor blade and gently hammering. This will take a while. Based on how much extra sealant oozed out and dried on the pulley shaft seals, I suspect I'll find a thick layer around the inside edge of the flat surfaces as well.

Thoughts on a Ryobi Impact and Compressor for College bound Daughter

The first thing I'd do to prepare her for a potential wheel change is to make sure the wheels are properly torqued to the manufacturer's recommendation and not blasted on with an impact - so they'll come off easily with even a standard breaker bar. Maybe add some anti-seize to the hub to...

Ideas for separating Ranger R980 tire changer gearbox / transmission case halves

The tire changer needs new bearings (actually needs a new top case half since it's cracked, but that's another problem). Ranger says it's a sealed unit that should be replaced for $700 USD, but the manual shows a slew of parts, including standard-sized bearings. The case halves are sealed with...

Lift modifications Thread- Lets see them!

The battery is wider than the space between the runways, so it can't be dropped down and rolled out forward. And because of my garage setup with the mezzanine, there is no room to slide it sideways. Assume for all intents and purposes, this is a single car garage (10' wide) and the only way to...

Lift modifications Thread- Lets see them!

Correct. I don't need to walk under it, I just need to lift it enough to get a dolly under the battery to drop it out and wheel it out (and a new one in). People do it on jackstands, but I'm too old for that. Subtracting the height of the car from the max lift height, it should bring it up...

Lift modifications Thread- Lets see them!

I couldn't tell you how about the typical height, but my Bendpak HD7W Rev M posts are over 8' tall and lift height is about a foot less. If you go to Bendpak's web site they have really good details on all of their models if you want to know if it will fit in your space, along with locking...

Lift modifications Thread- Lets see them!

I don't know what you mean about the wheel buckets, but the battery is wider than the opening between the runways of my HD-7W set to wide.

Lift modifications Thread- Lets see them!

I may post a separate thread, but since I'm in here, is there a way to use a 4-post to lift a car like a 2-post from the frame rail lift points? I'm imagining some arms that are hung from the runways. I'd like to be able to do an EV battery exchange, but the battery is wider than the space...
