    Antique Pump Mystery

I think you nailed it, RTM! The lower piece is a facsimile of the upper piece. The bolt length is based on my measurements when I bought new SS ones not realizing that there should've been a valve/gasket thickness added in. I'll grab some new bolts and retrofit everything once the rubber comes...

    Antique Pump Mystery

It's definitely dual acting. Good call on the weights. I'm contemplating how I'm going to weight the flaps. I may end up using a piece of sheet metal to also add a bit of rigidity.

    Antique Pump Mystery

Not a bad guess. That's where I'm at right now. I'm planning on grabbing rubber vice leather and make some of my own flaps and give it a try. If that's true, I'm not sure how it would it would've been primed, although I can probably figure a way out. What initially threw me off is that I've...

    Antique Pump Mystery

I'm thinking there was a rectangle flap on the top and bottom of the inside of the middle section that is now missing. Since there are no obvious attachment points I'm wondering if they weren't just attached to one another using some shaft/spring combination.

    Antique Pump Mystery

I picked up this Rumsey "Terror" pump at an antique show a few weeks ago. The condition at the time implied that it hadn't been opened or otherwise messed with in some time, if ever. I disassembled it and could not locate any movable valves or soft goods, attachment points for valves, and other...

Brown and Sharpe Green Combination Square

I just got a dark green Brown and Sharpe combination square. It has "hardened" cast into the anvil. The green paint appears original to it but I never seen that color used on Brown and Sharpe tools. I assume it's original Brown and Sharpe because of the shapes of the cutouts which match other...

Lots of Asphalt Shingles Under Floor

I agree with loading factor, driftpin. Since most of the kitchen is above the crawl space I went in a few months ago and added footings, 6x6 posts, and bracing to support the floor. I did this because I felt the span was too great for the joist thickness. So a significant portion of the load is...

Lots of Asphalt Shingles Under Floor

I'm about to redo the flooring in the kitchen as part of the renovation. I was able to examine the cross section of the flooring through to the basement looking at a hole cut through the floor. Here's what I found: 1. Top Layer - linoleum 2. 1/2" plywood 3. 1.25" of asphalt shingles 4. 3/4"...
