Door options for better air seal?

I’m trying to spec out my new building and wanting to figure out a large door option that doesn’t have large air gaps. I’m going to be doing spray foam so the rest of the building will be relatively air sealed, but even the best of roll ups doors have pretty decent gaps. Moldings and brush...

How to mitigate echos in larger shop?

Planning out some of the final details and got to see a few shops the size I’m hoping to build. One thing that struck me when I was hanging out was the echos in the space. Large walls and concrete are gong to echo but is there a way I can make the larger space sound decent? Not looking to...

Anyone ever build so big things were too far away or other downside?

Anyone ever build so big things were too far away from things or other downside? I've been planning my future hobby wood shop build (no cars) and I've heeded peoples advice that whatever you think you need, go bigger. So right now I'm settled on a 40x50 with 10 foot walls. As I lay out...

Building height and roof slope for second floor?

Trying to figure out how tall to make my future shop, one end of it I'm going to put in a bathroom and office, wanted to use the space above these rooms for more than just storage, maybe a second room for a second office or similar. For those of you who've built a loft, how tall is your...

Having a hard time finding builder that doesn't have inasane prices

I'm would prefer red iron but at this point I'm open to ideas! If it was a pole barn I know I could build it myself, but I like the fact I bugs don't eat iron and I can power-wash every inch.

Having a hard time finding builder that doesn't have inasane prices

If you know of a metal building (red iron) contractor in the Charlotte NC area let me know! I have got a few quotes back to have a 40x60x14 metal building built for me and I'm beginning to wonder if I have unrealistic expectations or if the quote I'm getting are insane. I'm looking for the...

Questions about eaves on metal buildings?

So planning out my new shop. One of the question that came up was do I want eaves or not. It will be a 40x60 metal building, 16 feet tall. I don't plan to store anything under them, just considering them for aesthetics and keep the water off the walls/foundation. So questions to those of you...

Humidity in a 40x60 shop - North Carolina Summers

I had a small shop before this and had tried something like this. Mold and rust was a real issue. I ended up renting a climate controlled unit and moving my tools into it until I could build my shop. I kept a few tools, but resorted to putting them into plastic tubs. That's what lead me to...

Humidity in a 40x60 shop - North Carolina Summers

Would you advise against ridge vents or similar things? I was planning on going around with great stuff, silicone or similar and getting it air tight as possible. Make sure the contractor has a good approach for foundation to wall sealing, wall to roof sealing and other interactions like that.

Humidity in a 40x60 shop - North Carolina Summers

About to build my shop, one of the big challenges I face is humidity here in the south. I'm trying to figure out a way to keep the relative humidity down below 50% solidly. The building I'm hoping to build is 40x60x16 insulated to at least R13. I'll have one roll up door, but most of the...

Remote controlled in floor slab heating?

Located in Asheville NC area, the shop will be 40x60 two zones, will most likely be getting a large tank, power will be grid power and I'm going to spring for a dedicated 200amp service. Internet should be high speed cable internet.

Remote controlled in floor slab heating?

So I'm going to be building a shop that's a few hours from home, the plan is to move there full time in a few years, but I'm going to build the shop now so I can have a real shop and build a small living area into it so I have a place to stay while I'm up there. I know that in floor heating...

    Keeping the shop secure

I'm in the planning stages of my build and the shop will be on a piece of land I own about 2 hours away. I plan to build a house there in a few years, but shop first (priorities) with a basic living setup so I can go up on and stay for about half the time. Since I won't be up there all the...
