Part of the answer depends on the depth of cabinet you want, over head or under counter. I use the harbor freight 3 door cabinets (see the FRP thread for a picture) for overhead; they are just the right size to store gallon cans/jugs and smaller, and if you find them on sale, relatively cheap.

I use the metal and plastic parts containers that many have mentioned; but then I go one step further. I get the old deli/meat/bakery tray rollers from supermarkets when they close and have auctions. The one they use for meat trays works well for the plastic trays, and the one for bakery trays...

The posts will still protrude from the wall by about 2" after doing the insulation/OSB/tile board. I really don't want to cover up the posts, but I guess I will have to consider it. My overall theme of the shop is smooth/smooth. Smooth floor, no decoflakes, stainless steel workcounters...
