I have a 74 x 30 x 10 building. It's a 30 x 50 pole barn with a stick-built addition (not my doing), finished interior, insulated walls and ceiling, corrugated metal inside and out. Has a concrete slab, 70A service, and two Mitsubishi heat pumps. I'm in northeastern MD. I have a business...

    Staircase door question

Why not just put the door parallel with the stringer? Go in the door, turn left and up the stairs. If that's not enough width for the door, frame out a landing at the bottom step height.

    Sway in pole barn roof?

The sheathing acts as a shear plate. The framing's main structural purpose is to handle the vertical load. I would brace around large door openings, but I think the rest is overkill.

Removed walls, wall studs look strange - termites?

I just went through this with floor joists. There was one joist that looked perfectly fine from the outside but once you poked it (with your finger) it collapsed in many spots. Definitely poke the surrounding area with a screwdriver and replace as necessary. They like to travel through the...

    good value MIG welder

I bought a Hobart Handler 190 7-8 years ago from Tractor Supply with a 10% off coupon for $570. I've put that little machine through at least 100 lb of wire, hit the thermal limiter more than once, and it's held up fantastic. I can probably count on one hand how many times I've wished I could...

    Super sneaky

Looks like a nice setup. I like how it opens flush with the header.

    150ft pounds back killer

Even with a bunch of wind-up, torque at the top is the same as torque at the bottom.

    Opening up a wall

Funny, I just saw Red Green on my youtube recommended videos yesterday. They're watching... I don't know why it didn't dawn on me sooner, but my mentor at work mentioned years ago that he designed a building for our organization once... and he's a PE/PhD engineer. He came over yesterday and...

    Heavy duty work bench

Do you think it would have been cost effective to have the holes water-jetted?

    Opening up a wall

Ah, cool. You'll pick it up quickly. It's not as complicated as it seems. It sure is disruptive. I still own my old house (unfortunately), but the good news is I still have my shop set up there. I was hoping to open up this wall, run some circuits, and bring my equipment over. I do...

Aux heat coming on in normal heat mode?

The reversing valve, at least on my Carrier, makes a distinctive wooshing sound. I think it is releasing the pressure and equalizing the high and low side before the compressor fires back up in "cooling mode" to defrost the outdoor unit. I can hear it when it goes into defrost mode, and the...

    Opening up a wall

Lol breakfast tacos. I do owe him a beer, or at least some help with a plasma table when the time comes. I built my chassis to this design https://www.instructables.com/id/CNC-Plasma-Table/ It runs pulleys. With a jet cutter, you don't really need the torque from a screw drive, but you want...

CSTMG8's garage and future shop build.

Nice setup!!! What kind of hobby work? Your electrical panels look a lot like what I have. There's a lot going on there. Is that a standby generator transfer switch? I also have a rainsoft water system that looks just like that. If you've never had one, they're not as complicated as the...

    NEMA 10-30 for Welder

There is no current-carrying neutral on a purely 240V load like your welder. The black and white are both hot, 180 deg out of phase (which is why the two bars in the breaker box alternate going down). If you take the cover off the breaker, you'll see the black on one leg of the breaker and the...
