    Heavy workbench build

Hardox 500, You won't be drilling any holes in that just for fun!! ;) I'm also member of the solid table top club, mine is 50mm thick, (2"-ish), and 2x1 m. Weight somewhere between 800 and 1000kg. Stays put regardless of what I'm manhandling in the vice!

    Sheet metal surface for workbench?

Just some misc bench thoughts. Go with as thick a sheet as you can, if you can dent it with a one handed sledge hammer it's too thin. Aluminium is nice, but remember the sledge hammer, durability isn't the same as steel. Just bare metal is best, any surface treatment, paint, galvanized etc...

I'm So Darned Old - Here's What I Learned in College

Our educational system over here, Sweden, looks a bit different but in what roughly corresponds to high school I got an auto mechanic education. Then I worked a few years in a Volvo Heavy truck repair shop before going back to school and on my 30th birthday got my MSc in Mechanical engineering...

    Steel top for workbench

I´ll add to the masses, Don't paint it! You'll end up with paint chips in every carburetor or other sensitive component you will ever work on on it.. Mine is bare metal, on the top at least, and I have no problem with rusting. (pic was taken just after I got it and it had been stored outside a...

    tool loan to friend

I'd expect a friend of mine to replace anything that he borrowed from me that got lost/stolen when in his care. However, people have vastly different views on condition. What I consider "ruined" , dirty or broken others consider perfectly OK. I take better care of borrowed stuff than my own...

If you could design the perfect garage, how would it be?

I for one doesn't understand the whole Lounge/"mancave" business that's so popular. What I want is basically a fully furnished metal/auto repair/fabrication shop with extra parking space. If I can have a closed off wood shop too I'd be even happier. Watch TV and drink beer I can do in the...

If you could design the perfect garage, how would it be?

I think a lot like you, I'd however add a specific welding/steel fabrication area too. Stuff gets really dirty if you have to weld and grind everything in the general workshop. Some steel/sheet metal work will always have to be done on for example a car on the lift but having the opportunity to...

    The repurposing thread

Final update: Did the finishing touches on the roof Friday evening and "Little John" could finally move indoors =) Some electrical installation left but otherwise it's close to finished. From scrap to tractor parking in little over two months worth of weekends and evenings, I'm happy with...

    The repurposing thread

True, and the value of these sort of things can be more than "somewhere to park the old JD". I have a "sit down job", Mechanical engineer/product developer, doing some hands on physical work at home is my relaxation. ....And I have a ton of "relaxation projects" =)

    The repurposing thread

Progress: (old post https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/the-repurposing-thread.209475/post-9663144) So, finished the frame and moved it to it's intended place. Stumbled upon an old gentleman who was clearing out an old barn before selling the property and bought some home cut 2" planks...

    The repurposing thread

Got my hands on the transport cage the new large milling machine we got at work was delivered in. Also got some old scrap square tubing 110x60mm, 120x80mm with misc wall thickness. The transport cage has a quite solid base so I decided to convert it to a car port-ish shed for the tractor to keep...

    Makita Addiction Thread

Just got the big angle grinder GA9020SF 230mm. A bit surprised that it was as cheap as it was. A soft start quality HD machine for not much more than 1.5 times what the cheapest chinesium machines are. So total Makita count is now up to 5 Cordless 18V machines and 5 corded 230V ones.

How a 20 minutes jobs turns into 2 hours

Oldest Mower I have is from -68, (from the serial number on the B&S engine), and the "New" one is about the same age as me, (from mid 70'S). Both works but I use the "new one" more since it vibrates less. Old one has ball bearing wheels so it pushes lighter tough. I hate new mowers with all...

    Garage / Workbench Photos?

I like my tools hanging on the walls, they are easy to find and takes up no floor space. Bought pre-holed 2x1m sheet metal that i mounted on the walls to hang the tools on. Hooks and hangers i buy or make when I need them. The bench is a beast, 2x1m with a 40mm solid steel top, weighs in at...

How would you prevent a "stainless steel" toolbox from rusting?

It's more of if it's Ferritic or Austenitic stainless rather than price, magnet sticks to Ferritic steel, not to Austenitic. However Austenitic stainless usually contains more chromium, which is an expensive alloying element, and usually have higher corrosion resistance so Yes, in a way you are...
