    Where should the TV go?

You southern guys and your garage TV's! I can't imagine having a TV out in my garage. First, every time some Victorias Secret ad came on I'd no doubt drop a tool, start a fire or otherwise do something stupid. And second, I do a fair amount of car-washing in my garage. High humidity and...

New homeowner with "electrical code" questions

Negligence and ignorance are two very different things.

New homeowner with "electrical code" questions

Yes, this was point exactly. I suppose I could have expanded but didn't think it was necessary. Maybe I live in a more law suit prone area than some!

New homeowner with "electrical code" questions

A homeowner can do their own work (in most states) so long as they follow locally adopted codes and get the required permits and inspections. If you install something not to code and there is a fire/injury/loss, not only will you likely not be covered but if there is any litigation that follows...

    Garage Cabinets and Organization

I went with a combination of Gladiator and Craftsman. I've been very pleased with both. Gladiator has the advantage of coming fully assembled and also seems to have more accessories these days.

    Garage Flooring Advice

My racedeck freeflow does "crunch" a bit when I get heavy buildup of road salt/dirt under it. But it's easily resolved with a decent shop vac. My experience has been that a good spring cleaning is needed to get the **** up from under the tiles. With freeflow tiles it's a pretty easy thing to...

How to determine a load bearing wall

At a minimum you're going to need to remove parts of the wall covering (drywall?) and see what the top and bottom look like. It may become quite obvious that it is load bearing when you see how the wall ties into the joists and floor. I just replaced a load bearing wall in a basement that I...

    Recessed lighting for bedroom layout

If I were putting them in a bedroom I'd put them against the wall and use wall wash trim to create a more dramatic effect. You could probably drill a few small holes (easily patched) to find the joists before going all in.

    rewire garage lights

You'd be amazed at how cleanly you can transition from your existing junction boxes to external conduit with a few readily available pieces from the big box stores. I have (4) rows of lighting in my garage and only 2 lined up perfectly with the existing boxes. Where they did line up I just...

How to heat my attached garage

I use a 110,000 btu high intensity infrared in my 900 square foot garage. You won't find a more simple setup. I haven't ever had any issues with moisture nor "stink". But each application is unique I suppose.

    outdoor wood furnace

Check out www.hearth.com for a fair bit of opinion on wood heating. You won't find a lot of OWB supporters over there but the information is solid.

Radio Frequency Interference with T-5 Lights

I went through this same round of shock, denial and finally acceptance last summer when I installed a bunch of T8's in my garage (T5's aren't the only light with this issue). When my two circuits of lights are both switched on I believe I can receive 2 of my 12 radio station presets. And those...

New house need bright outside light

We have two rather plain jane 2 head flood fixtures on the back of our house. One on each corner of the house. With dual 100W floods they are plenty bright for when we service our two muts at night. My two cents is that trying to do the entire back yard from a single fixture might be more...

    Outside lighting

I'm no expert but I'm guessing they need to be on a GFCI protected circuit and I think you would want them to be rated for use outside even if they are covered. Plenty of moisture outside even if they are not directly getting rained on.

    RaceDeck Free Flow or not?

I have no regrets going with FreeFlow. With a Michigan winter I can't imagine having a solid tile in my garage (daily drivers). Just my two cents though. In terms of subfloor I'd have to agree to a certain extent. I covered a gray epoxy with my free flow so it looks great. If I saw bare...
