In OP's climate (hot and humid), it may not be an issue of cost savings. Without insulation, a window A/C may not be able to keep the place cool at all.

They can be exposed (but need to be insulated as others have stated to prevent condensation). Personally I cover mine indoors with white plastic downspout; it's cheap and easy to work with, and can be slid over already-installed lines if you cut the back open.
