    Lift sizes?

If you drill any holes before you have the lift in your shop, you'll hate yourself! Get the lift, roto-hammer the holes with the posts in place.

Hairline cracks in new concrete driveway

Too bad that happened. No one has mentioned reinforcing. Geographically speaking, steel reinforcing may or may not be part of the process. If the slab has reinforcing in the form of rebar or heavy welded wire fabric, although it's got a hairline crack, it won't likely move any more.

Putting a basement under my garage (& back yard) ?

Having moved thousands of yards of material with our two Bobcats, they are indeed amazing machines. However, add water and you are quickly in an entirely new dynamic. If you are bare tire only you won't make it up much of a ramp in the mud. We use grouser tracks and they work well, except...

Exposed decking on porch, visible nails

Should work. Normal sheathing is 1/2". You'd have at least 1/2" penetration.

Putting a basement under my garage (& back yard) ?

Yikes! That's one ambitious project! Having been in the custom home building business for 35 years, I can tell you that this project will be an educational process for all ! Whatever you calculate for a budget, double that and you'll no doubt be in the ballpark. I own a couple of Bobcat...

What are the steps to building a house?

Here is the best advice you'll get, from a award winning custom builder who has been there, done that for over 35 years. **** CAN that place ! If you read garage journal, you'll want a decent shop. Find some flavor gently sloping land without a demo job and do it the smart easy way. Feel...

Do you guys realize that having to own ANY snow removal equipment means you live where it ***** ?

    Beam above garage is sagging...

Somebody needs to calc the appropriate glu-lam, the structure above supported, the old beam fished out and replaced by the new one. Based on the bolts, someone either did a built up header or tried to beef that one up. You don't have a tremendous load, but it is obviously more than your...

A GC might be able to answer this question.

A man after my own heart ! All the test of that stuff is just unnecessary overhead!

building dream garage, need bucket list ideas

You can't put in too many outlets. Make every outlet a double outlet box. 4 in some cases. Make sure you wire outlets overhead for lifts and cord reels. Maybe even a few in the floor if you plan on any permanent bench tools. Make sure you run open conduit up to the attic or second floor for...

    Garage sheetrock ceiling question

Good advice above. As a 30 year custom home builder, Rock it with 5/8 and call it happy. You can fasten every other joist so it's fastened @24" o.c. Stick with 5/8. It will slow a car fire. It's mandatory if attached, but just good practice on any garage. Forget the strapping. It's not...

is it possible to get wood to look like concrete?

And how the heck is the basement going to be polished concrete ? I'd say that ship has sailed !

Fix this mudhole behind my garage.

Every time we have chased drain issues in existing homes, we have found crushed or disconnected ADS corrugated. I shouldn't complain, we did a $ 50,000 repair of a sunken basement wall on a two story a couple of years ago. The downspout ran into a T. It became disconnected and over the years...

    Installing porch rail

Since you have the room, drill into the sides about 4" down and you'll be golden. Since your slab is essentially at the edge of the door, I doubt top mount will serve you well.

Fix this mudhole behind my garage.

Well that's a ***** ! Not even a 5 % slope from the garage away as most codes require. I would highly discourage anyone from plumbing downspouts into any type of french drain that is intended to take water away from a building. I have seen a few flooded basements and crawlspaces over the...
