Not just for noise, I have an 80 gallon IR compressor and when I'm blasting it puts out a significant amount of heat, so I would definitely pursue this if you can.

Are you worried about sealing the opening ? Jess' solution sounds very precise.... I've also used mouse pads / yoga mats cut to size and fastened over the opening. Then just cut an x and maneuver the pipe through it.
